old B38 "cruisers"

Post by Joef »

Men - does anyone know about the hulls on those old cabin cruisers that bertram made back in the 60's and early 70s? The length/width appears to be the old "widebody" Hunt hulls...but i can[t tell. They all are ugly and way underpowered...but cheap. anyone know wht that hull shape looks like?

Joe,

My research shows that the old 60's 38 footer is in fact the same hull design that Bertram used for the 1970-1976 Bertram 38 "Widebody" Convertible (37' 8" LOA and 14' 5" beam w/ 26,000# displacement). From 1978-1986 the 38 footer was redesigned and called the Bertram 38 III Convertible and was 38' 5" LOA and 13' 3" beam w/30,400# displacement. The 38 Special was built on the latter hull design from 1986-1987 and had a 27,000# displacement. (Source: McKnew/Parker Consumer's Guide to Sportfishing Boats)

The ones I knew were sportsfishermen with a 38 hull of the same style as the 31's. Built like a tank. By today's standards underpowered, but not then. Most were powder blue and white gelcoated. Actually great boats they should have developed further. Those that owned them loved them as they were "Bertram Built" and plowed through everything and anything.

I found this one on Green Turtle Cay a few years ago. Looks really cool, and yes it looks like it was built like a tank.

yeah...there is one near me in North Jersey...1964 aft cabin..the boat looks pretty beat - but the hull does seem to have the lines of a large 31.
