Thinking about going to montauk next month
I am in Massapequa and thinking about going to Montauk for a couple of days in late September.
I was thinking about going right out of Jones Inlet and taking the outside the whole way. Any pro's or con's?
Obviously the weather but any suggestions?

It's actually the best way if you have the fuel capacity to make the entire trip without the need to refuel. No inlet or tide problems no matter what the weather, if you make the harbor inlet, you're home free. Give the point a wide berth if the weather or wind against tide conditions exist. It will take a few more minutes but your crew will appreciate it. If you need Marina arrangements/details/recommendations, please let me know. If you prefer to take the "inside" route via LI Sound, time Plum Gut for a slack or beginning/end of a tide so you can run right through. If you take that route, watch out for Lobster pots in Gardiner's Bay as there are a lot of them and they get pulled under in strong tides and are hard to see. If you are unfamiliar with fishing Montauk, I'll be glad to fill you in. Walter

I have done some calculating and if I go out of Fire Island inlet it is 107 miles (93 nautical miles as per MaxSea program).
That is leaving from where my boat is docked in East Massapequa rt next to Ketchum ave (Amityville).
I have not done an accurate fuel consumption calculation on my boat. I am roughly figuring it does a bit better than 1.85 MPG (not nmpg). It may get 2mpg but I am not 100%.
@1.85 MPG I should have the range there and back. I was thinking of bringing an additional 50 gallons of fuel to give me 200 total gallons of diesel.
Of course sea conditions and weather can play a factor as well. I was planning to go Sept 19 and stay 2 nights. I was planning on leaving at like 6am to head out there to hopefully have calm conditions, that sound right?

Looks like the Hurricane IGOR guy is potentially going to mess my trip up!
Sept 19 thru 21.
I would prob be concerned about rough conditions coming back, I guess we will have to wait and see.
BTW Walter thanks for the info for Montauk, I spoke to Marie and its all set. I am still waiting to see what the weather is going to be.

you can always run through the bay and then the inside. on a number of hurricane swells the ocean was only big for a day and even then if its a north wind the waves are so far apart that running isnt a challenge and the surface is pretty nice. i surfed montauk during one hurricane swell and there were 20 boats outside the break line fishing. it was well overhead.

Decided to cancel the trip, too bad I was really looking forward to it. I did not think it was wise to drive 100 miles to fish on Monday knowing that this was the forecast. We were going to even maybe go on the inside and thru the locks but still decided against it.
Oh well I will have to wait and do it sometime in the future.
