Rod holders on the transom gunwale

I would like to add two rod holders to the gunwale along the transom of my Bahia Mar. I don't think they were stock on 31s, but I'm sure some of you already have done this addition. Will any angle of Lee holder fit ? Will the backing plate fit too ?

They have to be either 15 degree of 90 degree vertical. 15 would be best unless you plan to use bent butt rods.

these are 0 degree large Lee's with backing plates, if you want more then 15 angled you cant fit them behind the panels, or else you would have to toe them out.

Word of caution....

Side gunnel mounted rod holders are exerting the leverage force along the length of the gunnel. No problem there.

On the transom, the force is being applied to the width of the gunnel which is only hard attached to the hull at the cap/hull joint and trapped beneith the gaurd rail. That means that the gunnel can flex quite a bit.

In addition to just simple backing plates, the underside of the gunnel should be built up by at least 3/4" and carried out by at least 12" either side of the mounting hole.

Not much factory meat back there...

I removed the factory flag holder and put in a 15 degree in it's place.
The only drawback I had was that the transom panel had to be cut to accomodate the angle.

Is there any advantage to the 90 degree vs 15 degree other than the fit? I am thinking about doing the same thing.

The 90 degree long tubes don't fit. I think there's a short tube that might fit.

The 90 degree holders are more for bent butt rods, which should probably not be in the transom anyway.

With a swivel 90 degree rod holder backed properly in the pt or stbd rear corner of the gunnel you can fight a big fish right out of the rod holder with a bent but rod. Brew has at least four across the back of his ride with a total of at least 12 rod holders with varying angles and positions, Hope he chimes in with his expertise...
Decide on what type fishing you do most, look at your gear, stand up, bent but, chair no chair, and plan your rod holders to maximize your spread. we troll up to 14 rods, and have many lures right in the wash off the transom...tuna love to check out those Bertrams. BH

I have 3 Lee swivel 30 degree holders on each side of the gunwales and 2 swivel 15 degree holders on the transom on either side of the built in fish cooler.

I have 5 strait holders across the back inside two 90 degree holders in the corners. I run 80 strait butts inside the 130 two speed corners. That does not include the other 12 rods, all 130 two speeds or the green stick down the center with 9 baits. Thats 28 baits with hooks. Im a dick head and I do it cause I saw it on TV.

1 inch side to side. Pluse 2 " of teak Seems to work ok.

thats the key .brewster has teak covering boards which changes everything . nice set up john 3 on either side and two on transom.i use three on both sides and four off chair .

Thanks for the compliment. It means a lot coming from somebody with your experience. Remember when we were bored and we put out a ridiculous amount of spreader bars. I think we had 10 bars in the water, 2 ballyhoo, plus the 9 green stick baits. Overall we had 161 lures in the water.

I use my bent butts in my 15 degree transom holder.
I also set the lightest drag possible to keep the baits in place.
This way I have minimal strain on the gunwal when a fish hits.
