Stuffen box

I have the old bronze style stuffen box. I need to replace the bolts they are bronze bent and stripped. Can I use fine thread SS bolts? or do I need to use bronze.

Personally, I'd search for bronze. If you use stainless, cover liberally with Tef-gel, especially where it makes contact with the bronze.

Are you talking about the Stuffing Box or Shaft Log?

Isn't the Stuffing Box inside the boat where the clamping gland is never really in contact with water...maybe a different style then I am familiar with.

Sim, suffin box or shaft log same thing I think. Thanks going to order bronze. Thats what I was afraid of.

The Log is the piece that gets directly attached to the hull. The Stuffing Box Hose gets clamped to the end. The hardware attaching the Log to the boat should be Bronze/ Silicon Bronze

The Stuffing box is the assemble Clamped to the free end of Stuffing Box Hose. It is the part that has/is the Packing Gland (Seal). The part that drips and you tighten... Some Glands are in line where you need two large wrenches to snug it up, others have Studs protruding and you just use a box wrench to tighten the gland up. These Studs could be 316SS as they do not contact sea water directly...other then a drip or spray from the gland. Others styles include the Drip-less Stuffing Box.
