Hi Russ,
Best I can tell, before establishing their "standard" hull ID numbering system, they used various number combinations for internal reasons. The 315 means Fly Bridge Cruiser, and the 1226 means the 1125th hull laid up, but I have no idea as to the 141 (probably some internal code). It appears that your boat was laid-up in mid '72, about 31 hulls before Island Girl. The hull number on my old 1973 Sport Fisherman was: BER 01257 1172-314.
Long time Bertram engineer Lee Dana explained it to me in an email as follows: BER (Bertram); 01257 (1156th hull laid up); 1172 (November, 1972); 314 (31' Sportfish model). Even though mine was laid up in late 1972, it was documented as a '73 model. Since the prototype hull was number 101, Lee said to subtract 101 from the hull number to determine which production hull you have. As Capt. Patrick has previously recorded, the model numbers are: 312 Open/Moppie; 313 Hard Top/Sedan; 314 Sport Fisherman; 315 Fly Bridge Cruiser; 316 Bahia Mar; 317 Express. We have some owners on the Board who say that their model number is inconsistent with with the system described by Lee Dana. Best we can tell in these cases, the model (superstructure) was changed after hull lay-up due to market demands.
Please keep us posted on how the sea-trial goes/went.

I supposedly have a 1973 boat. The hull # is 314-57-1133 and it had a 170 gal tank when I purchased it about 7 years ago. My guess (and based on your hull # theory) is that it was built sometime in 1972 as a 1973 model. The hull number is not stamped on the transome but appears on the transome bilge. You can also find the hull # on various parts of the boat like under the v-berth storage compartments.

Maybe we should put our model and hull number in our signature profiles. It will be an easy reference and we might find out who went "down the runway" just before and after us. Couldn't hurt.
