Vessel Documentation

Post by jackryan »

I'm in the process of trying to document my 31 Sprotfish. I finally figured out what my hull ID # is and I now need a measurement called "overall depth. Here's the Coast Guard's definition of overall depth:

Overall Depth means the vertical distance taken at or near amidships from a line drawn horizontally
through the uppermost edges of the skin (outside planking or plating) at the side of the hull (excluding the
cap rail, trunks, cabins and deckhouses, and deck caps) to the outboard face of the bottom skin of the hull,
excluding the keel. For a vessel that is designed for sailing where the interface between the “keel”
and the “bottom skin of the hull” is not clearly defined (as is the case with an “integral” or “faired”
keel), the keel is included in the “overall depth”.

The form has pictures. Here's a link to a copy of the form:

My interpretation of this on the 31 is to take a measurement from the rub rail to the bottom of the V near mid ship. Does anyone have and idea what this measurement is?

Thanks,

JR

Jack: I would put 2'-6" in for what is normally called draft. That will be close enough.

Have you been over to the North Shore yet?

On my Ctf of Doc it has:
Gross tons 10
Net tonnage 8
Length 30.3
Breadth 10.9
Depth 4.8
I'm not sure but indecision may or may not be my problem.

I think depth is not the same as draft (3.5)

Jack,

Your interpretation is correct...

Thanks for the reply's. I think I'll use 4'8", Andre. I put 2'8" on my first application and they kicked it back saying that the according to the measurements that I provided, the boat is not heavy enough to qualify for documentation. I was thinking draft, and they wanted depth.

Here are the numbers on my cert of Doc, for my Bahia Mar

Gross tons 10
Net tonnage 7
Length 30.2
Breadth 11.1
Depth 4.7

You'll notice, very similar to Andre's. I would feel comfortable
using either set of numbers and being in the ballpark.
