Broke a Shaft need advice on a new one.

Post by renegademike »

Hi guys
I just cracked my shaft right inside the Prop. The thing was 85% cracked.
Good thing I shut the engine down as soon as I felt the heavy vibration or I would be shopping for a new prop as well.

I"m in Cabo but have contacts in san diego.
Any advice on what SS to look for. around here people are saying 316 stainless will work fine. What do you experts think. Its 1 3/8 my shaft is 84" long

thanks for the help.

Mike,

Straight 316L is too soft... You want Aquamet 22. See: High Performance Shafting

thanks Pat I kinda jumped the gun and ordered the 316 shaft stock already. I'm having it machined here in cabo.
I will look into getting the Aquamet 22 and use the 316 as a spare. Time is important for me but of course I want the best quality also. I'm losing Charters everyday that I'm down.

My 31B has been in operation since Nov 2007 and I already have 3500 hours on her.
Any recommendations on where I can get the Aquamet 22 stock that's near the west coast

Mike,

All prop shops should stock, or can easily get, the AQ22. Should be a slew of 'em in the San Diego area...

Not that Capt Pat needs a second...

------- but I'll second it anyway. A-22 shaft and keep the 316 for a spare.
