PYI PSS packing gland

Post by Geaux Deep »

Question:

What is the expected lifetime of the PYI PSS Dripless packing gland?

Is there some type of periodic maintenance I should be doing?

The reason for the question is that my port PSS started spraying a good deal of water at about 2700 rpm. I slid the collar down about 1/4 " and it stopped the spraying. The puck is now a whitish gray color due to age.

I replaced all of the hose clamps last year.

Each year the water feed should be checked for flow. What will kill them more than anything else is heat.

Inspect the hose for hardness and cracks and at the first sign, replace.

Use no lube only liquid soap. Any type of petrolium on the face will keep it from sealing.

If the stainless collar becomes caked, remove and polish with 1000 wet/dry.

As the hose ages it looses elasticity. That is why you have to tighten it up a little. You may want to replace the hoses if the interval between tightenings becomes too frequent.
