Bertram 28 with Yanmar 315's?

Post by Pagemark »

The boat in question is in Panama and the owner's classified ad says his Bertram 28 has Yanmar 315's. I didn't think 315's would fit in a 28. Can someone please ID engines from attached photo ... and offer an opinion on what performance might be expected if these are 315's? Thanks in advance.

With enough money you can make almost anything fit. I saw a 28B with 454's. Could not believe my eyes; but there they were.

Tight fits make for difficult maintenance. Always a trade-off. I just love being able to get around my Cummins. Easier than when I had my Chrysler 440 gassers.

Here's a pic that's been brightened up a little.
It looks like a portion of the upper deck was removed and/or replaced.(?)
The cabin configuration does not appear original either.

Thanks for the brighter pic ... yep, looks like 315's.

Is it fair to assume that displacement and wetted surface area on plane for B28 and B31 are approximately equal ... and if so, performance w/ 315's should also be appox equal? (all other things being equal - props tuned, hull surface condition, fuel load, wind area, etc., etc.)

The deadrise is 23 on the 28 as opposed to 22 on the 31 if I remember correctly. the 31 is a little heavier too. I bet they would be fun but can only imagine the project of makng them fit. My 28 has 212 hp per side deisel and feels pretty good at 23 knots. I wonder how much work it was to make things come together. Probably can't utilizee the torque of the diesel due to shaft angle and prop diameter hull clearance.

They made new hatch boxes in addition to lots of other stuff. The 454's in the 28 was done with no hatch mods. The little Ford 302 hardly fits so any other engine is going to take some custom work.
By the way a 28 FBC weighs more then a 31 FBC.

Those are 315's in a v-drive configuration.

A 28 I know of with 315's did 42 knots top end.

Limiting factor is prop size to keep the shaft angles down.

Do any of you know any more details on those repowers? Id like to know, just out of curiosity, :) what it took. If you have any other pictures or details id love to see them.

I have to say i know nothing about v drives so whats the story. Is the engine simply mounted backwards and the shaft passes under it after going through the v-drive "box"? Ill leave it there before your really get to find out how little i know. :)
