Aluminum Cleaner

Post by Spike Hunter »

Guys,

I have removed the old canvas on top of the aluminum frame on the flybridge. Do you have any suggestions about cleaning the pitting on the aluminum rails on the frame before I put the new canvas and eisenglass on?

I appreciate your help!

Peter,

Acid wash with a weak solution of phosporic acid in water. AlumaPrep is already formulated & available at most marine supply houses. Rinse the acid off, dry, and treat with CorrosionX. Wet a rag with CX, wipe the aluminum, let dry for a day, & wipe off any excess. Re-treat with CX once a month or as needed.

Woody wax works pretty well also. Patricks method is the right way to go, but the Woody Wax is pretty close. A bit less work, but not going to be quite the same result as Patricks process.

Capt. Pat,

Is AlumaPrep 33 what we're talking about?

Can you use this product on anodized alum without removing the anodize?

That'd be the stuff... It won't harm good anodization. Prep time is: Keep the aluminum wet with the acid for about 3 - 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with water. CX within 1 - 2 hours.

Any time you use something like this that you're not familiar with, do a test in a small, inconspicous area...
