6.5 L GM diesels

Post by JDavis »

Looking at a pair of 6.5 L GM diesels with zf hurth 2.5 /1 transmissions. Just wanted to get some input on these as far as reliability, size (has to fit in a 31) fuel burn and whatever else you think about how these would perform in a 31 fb sportfisherman. Thanks in advance for input.

Run, don't walk away from them. Terrible engines...gas engines that GM tried to make into diesels, and failed.

In a word they suck. A well respected mechanic friend of mine signed up to be one of their distributors and was planning on installing one is his semi-custom single screw boat. In theory it seemed like a good fit as he was pulling a 454 and Marine Diesel claims the 6.5 is a direct replacement. When the engine showed up it was a nightmare. He sent it back and ended the relationship. He has since installed a Volvo.

Run away. Run far away!
Regards,

Doug L.
