Navigation lights.. incadescents of LEDs?

Post by IRGuy »

The red/green lens on my original Bertram stock combined bow light has faded quite a bit, so I am thinking of leaving the fixture there and mounting new running lights on the sides of the flybridge. I need to replace my masthead and anchor lights as well, and have looked at some of the LED versions on the market. They are very expensive, but I like the fact that they are supposed to last over 50,000 hours (meaning you should never have to change a bulb again), and with such a long life they can be sealed. They also use a small fraction of the power of traditional incadescent bulbs.

Does anyone here have any experience with them?

I have an LED mast head light. Although it wasn't properly sealed, it keeps on ticking. It can be seen for miles, and I never turn it off....

To preserve night vision, although some nights they reflect off huge bow wave spash .. Man its really bright ..

Thanks guys for the replies.. it looks like everyone who has them is happy with them.. so I will be installing LED lights.. but I am having heartburn over the cost. AquaSignal seems to be the only mfgr with a full suite of LED nav lights, including a combined anchor/masthead light.. and it alone lists for $725.. I can get it online for $435. I do not understand why this price is so high.. unless it is just a price/availability issue. From my searching so far it appears that they are the only mfgr who has them, but I am still looking and trying to get prices on other mfgrs.
