Jacksonville Area?

Post by Sean B »

This might be a stretch, but I suppose it can't hurt to ask: a fellow Bertram Owner who lives in New England asked me if I'd be willing to look over a blown Cummings 6BTA engine that he is buying to re-build and put in his boat.

Basically want he wants to find out is whether the engine still has all the components on it that it is supposed to. I'd love to help, but the problem is that I've got 3208 Cats in my boat, and if the 6BTA were missing anything I wonder if I would even notice.

So... is there anybody here in the Jacksonville area, and that knows the 6B's, and would be willing to have a look at one for a fellow Bertram addict?

Oh yeah - does anyone know where I could get a technical picture of the 6BTA, maybe one of those "exploded views" showing all the major bolt-on components of the engine, so that I might be able to do the job myself?

Sean,
I'll e-mail you a pix or two out of the manual , if you like.
I'm not sure but indecision may or may not be my problem.

I'd be more concerned over the "blown" condition.

That needs to be defined to see if its even worth while going to visit.

Roger what Bruce says...the 6B's are very robust engines, but certain models had issues with blowing holes in pistons, ruining blocks, etc. Unless its a give-away price - like a "free" puppy or kitten, hire someone from a Cummins place to take a look.

Actually, if its advertised as "blown" run fast, don't walk away from it....there are too many real nice reman and good used 6B's out there to screw around with a "blown" engine.

Sean, make him leave his hotty girlfriend and get in his little poncy tautoge(or how ever you spell it) or one of his other little 2 seaters and go him self. Heck the gfriend needs a vac as well(maybe form him)

Ask him to tell you about his "famous" drink at the other "bertram enthusiasts" party

Harry - pics would help a lot.
Andre - the manual would help a lot too.

Vic & Bruce - he is buying this thing from eBay with the intent to rebuild it. I'm not sure what condition it is in, other than it needs to rebuilt. "Blown" might have been a poor choice of words...

Timmy - he does seem to have a way with the babes, doesn't he?

Thanks guys!!

As far as I can tell, he seems to be another fellow practitioner of the very wise "rent but don't buy" philosophy
