Donation Time at Bertram31.com

Post by Carl »

Hey guys, lets not see this site go the way of BoatDiesel.com and we should not have Bruce digging in his pocket to keep it running. I think it has been quite awhile since we did one of these.

This site saves me time and money learning from others that have gone down the road before me. Sometimes it boat related other times not. This site is also a piece of sanity at times for me. A brief getaway from the daily grind, almost like walking down the dock and meeting up with friends.
Lets keep it going, send what you can.

Using Paypal, it takes under a minute and you don't have to remember to write a check later...if you can find the checkbook.

Thank you Bruce and thank you Captain Patrick

Carl

Considering the huge amount of precious information & wise advices I achieved on this board, I'm considering signing up for a subscription more than a donation, which I just sent

you may be on to something
The members rooster shows 2046 individuals. If half are active and that half subscribe a minimum of $10 that would yield
$10,230 a year. I do know know what it takes to run the site a year but just do the math. The senior members might want to look at that. I know some people contribute between $100-500 per year. Not exactly fair for a small group to contribute to keep the site up and the amount of work and effort some individuals volunteer there time for nothing just to keep us up and running. Also it is nice not to have advertising hitting us on the site. Hope the senior members will discuss about some type of subscription. That would give them an idea of a finite budget every year. I think you have a great idea to discuss
just my 2 cents

All this sounds logical.
However, shouldn't we have an indication of how much this site costs per year, so we can do the above calculations?

My reason for starting a donation drive is far from altruistic, I’d say it is more selfish in that I want to keep this site alive and my few bucks won’t cut it. So don’t thank me, help me and send what you feel is right for you.

Subscriptions- If Bruce wants to go this direction, I am open to it.

That said I believe Bruce thought subscriptions was the downfall of Boatdiesel.com. Subscription fell and the site no longer supported itself.

Yes, our members signup rooster shows a high number, 2046 was stated. I’d guess 7 out of 10 stopped in for a couple posts and moved on over the years (15-20 years?) Some were regulars at a certain period and now just stop by once in awhile for a brief visit. Really look at the active members these days, it’s a couple handfuls at most. How much of a subscription fee can be charged to keep the site sustainable charging the handful
Almost more important members that stop in a couple times a year, many with invaluable information, just to say hi to old friends…would they pay a subscription to stop in for a quick chat?

Just my take…I’ll go with whatever Bruce prefers.

Carl,

I would consider it a test, do you get value from this site? if so donate.

Also I have not looked at the backend of this site in quite some time, I would guess it is time for an upgrade and I will also donate my time as an IT professional to make sure it runs right and hopefully can offset any of those expenses.

KTM-

Your backend work saved the site from what I understand. That is one heck of a donation.

No need to test, put it out there.

I get value in time saved learning from other members excellence in doing a job to perfection and sometime more important learning from their mistakes. It takes something special to say, yeah I screwed that job up by doing this or that and not doing it this way.
I get value tossing out ideas and getting views and ideas I never thought of.
I get value meeting other people who enjoy the Best Boat ever Made.
I get value shooting the breeze and clearing my head.
I get value meeting new friends, some close, others halfway around the Globe.

I get value, so I donate what I can to keep the sandbox running.

Hopefully we cover the cost as a whole, if not I would hope Bruce would chime in so we can adjust as required.

Thankyou Carl and everyone. Glad to keep Pat's dream alive and still going.
Special thanks to KTM who rooted thru the old code and updated it to remain alive.
I can do a whole lot of things, but that's one area this old dog is not going to learn. Programing performace cars is bad enough.
Thank you all again and Pat if your looking at this post, I still miss you buddy.
