Pete,
Nice pics! I enjoyed the tilted cleats in the aft! I didn't understand what these elevated bilge pumps are?
As for the water tank, are you sure you cannot fit a 50-100 liter bladder somewhere? I have three of them, you can really squeeze them almost anywhere and as they DO NOT need an aeration valve.

Re: Eastwind 2022
In those pics are a bait well pump, raw water wash down and standard bilge pump and an emergency high capacity pump mounted higher up and high water alarm. Also the engine raw water in takes have whT folks refer to as crash valves, turns your engines into big bilge pumps as well.
Bladders could work, I only use fresh water for cleaning dishes, rinsing windows, washing hands. We generally carry on 5 gallon jugs for drinking water.

Re: Eastwind 2022
My middle compartment has a large bin where I store motor fluids, n some cleaning stuff. I wouldn’t put life jackets or ditch bag in there…access can be slow especially with people on board that will be standing on whatever hatch needs to be opened. That and my bilge is wet. The bins keep stuff dry… but it’s still damp n humid under there.
Yes storage is minimal of these boats. My big offshore jackets go in cargo nets on side walls of v-berth with a few more under the v-berth. If taking a bunch of people I have a pack of jackets that will be left out.

look at the dimensions of this 55 liter Nuova Rade bladder.
You can squeeze it somewhere and for the uses you describe it should be enough.

Re: Eastwind 2022
Carl,
We closed off bilge water flow under the cabin bulkhead. We will see how it goes over the course of a season sitting in the water but I’m hoping it’s going to cut way down on odors and dampness in the cabin.
I only have the bigger offshore life jackets onboard and always keep 1 laying out loose for however many people I have onboard but I keep 8 on the boat. I may have to add a cargo net to the v berth.
Even if I can keep the extra anchor, dock lines and bumpers under the deck it helps.

Yannis thank you for the info. For now the stock water tank will do.

Re: Eastwind 2022
I had feeling you closed off the water passageway.
I keep the lunch hook under forward hatch for the beach. Going offshore I just bring the crate with anchor, line n extra chain. I used to keep that between engines with batteries butted up to the door bulkhead, but like them up a bit higher just in front of fuel tank bulkhead. Shorter cable run, neater n drier.
I do have lots of wasted space outboard the motors, I was thinking of opening up access panels and utilizing that shelf n space. Just another project that hasn’t gained traction.
Would be nice to place tackle there instead of under v-berth.

Re: Eastwind 2022
I'm not aware if the 31 is like the 28, but in my 28 there are two openings per side, except for the lowest middle opening under the main bulkhead.
Which means that even if you block that middle opening, there still is deck water reaching under the cabin floor...
I hate water going into the cabin and I always wanted to do something about it, only I haven't reached that level of perfection yet...

Re: Eastwind 2022
Yannis. It’s different we were able to completely close it off. Having spent a dozen seasons with water under the cabin floor, that was coming from an old dirty cockpit bilge. It should be a really nice change for the better.

Congratulations. I like what you did she looks great. Now it's time to get the family out and chase those stripers before they leave.
Good luck with her.

Looking over the pictures again I see the did a one-piece headliner. Wow, that must have been fun wrestling into the cabin and getting it up. Is it made of fiberglass?

Re: Eastwind 2022
The headliner is made of nidacore. They split it down the middle and put it in in two pieces. We initially thought we might be able to get it in in one piece. No wrestling was going to allow it in the door. We would have needed to take the cabin bulkhead out.
But we had a teak furring strip that runs down the center which looks nice and the access hatches are so great. Don’t think I’ll ever have to take it down now that it’s up.

Re: Eastwind 2022
She’s home! The plan was to leave yesterday at 3pm, run out Shinnecock and back in Fire Island, 42 miles out in the Ocean along the beach.
Time expired at 5pm with some small stuff still needing to be finished. Losing daylight and the wind kicking up we packed up and hustled out. Really sloppy seas once we hit the inlet, there was a chop between 4-5s. We couldn’t manage anything over 20kts with a headsea hitting us at 10 o clock. But we came close enough to hit the head buoy at the newly marked Fire Island inlet 5 minutes after sunset. Not ideal, especially being that we didn’t have the radar, but enough light to pick up the buoys by eye.
Made the turn in and brought her up to 32kts at 2600 and eventually backed off to 28 kts at 2400. Navigated our way back to the new slip. Got her tied up, a quick freshwater rinse. My amazing wife was waiting for us with some sandwiches. Drove Rich, the guy who did all the work and ran it back with me, home.
In bed at midnight I realized I left the keys in the ignition like a dumbass jumped out of bed and ran back down. All in all a great day.

Carl,
I accumulated a list over my 10 years here of things you guys already did. The fact that I was able to check a large majority of them off the list and the thought that Capt Pat might be proud and not shaking his head is an accomplishment in itself.
If you need evidence, review my first 100 posts in 2011, haha.

Great. Glad you finally did it. You have a lot of new memories to make with a boat you can trust. Now get the family out so everyone can enjoy what you accomplished.
By the way, not a fan of facebook.

Re: Eastwind 2022
Hope you guys had a great Fathers Day. Starting to get her loosened up and getting some of the details together. The kids call it “The New Boat” and I have to correct them. That’s a pretty good endorsement.
Two observations; the first being an easy 28kt cruise is obscene and maybe to much since my boys sit down for a meal at the dinette every time we move spots. Slowing down to a slow cruise of 24kts, I think I was caught laughing out loud. Secondly getting into a decent bay chop and hammering down past a bunch of triple outboard boats is priceless. The look on their face when my 55 year old girl goes by.
Lastly I kinda left the freshwater system alone, over the week I replaced hoses, fittings, filter, faucets. Each time I replaced something a new weakest link showed up. Good times.
I’m a pretty happy camper. Still need some things dialed in before I run 40+ miles offshore but almost there.

When the boat has more New stuff then old stuff...I think you can get away with calling it the New Boat.
When more coin has been put into the Old Boat then the original owner paid for it, I think you can get away with calling it the New Boat.
Or in my case...just call it The Boat.
Playing with anything on these old boats is like a 15 minute plumbing job on an old house...It never only takes 15 minutes and you'll be back to the hardware store multiple times before its done.
My fresh water system is on my to do list too...Its a dirt simple system as I installed it 30 years ago. Simple, but what a pain trying to get behind and under things that are not easy to get behind and under. I should just plan in replacing everything and save me the trips and rework...but always trips and rework.
Dialing in does take awhile...but so nice to hit the start button and instantly they come to life, its a confidence builder.

Re: Eastwind 2022
Tony, so far we have 24 hours on the engines. I’m fortunate that the boat and my office are about 2 miles from the house so I can knock out little things before work or in the evening. Yesterday morning I was able to run around and pick up some misc parts before work. And after work before dinner I was able to swap a couple of plumbing fittings and mount cargo nets in the v berth for my life jackets.
So I keep plugging away, putting on some hours and buttoning her up a bit. My little guy,Justin, is 11 and is learning to run the boat which is a lot of fun too.

Plugging away is a great way to keep a project progressing without it becoming “work”. That sure has to feel better then running over to the yard to see progress made from last week with tools and parts sitting in same spot.
I saw your installed cargo nets on facebook. Where did you find those, they are great! Since we tossed the old ripped original large nets, we have only found smaller ones. They work, but deep n large like yours would be so much nicer.

It looks like you tweaked the angel of the struts.
Did you change the shaft angle ?
Do you know what your clearance is between the bottom and the props?

Good questions I’ll have to go back to my notes. I want to say we tried to get the down angle as close to 12 degrees as we could. Clearance wasn’t an issue I don’t know that we measured it. zf 1.5 to 1 sound right?

Not sure what NY says about how old you have to be to run a boat, but I can tell you that in a few years he will be running the boat while you sit in the back and relax.
