Good news Pete glad you got a shakedown run in sounds like she ran good can’t wait to get together next summer somewhere. She is looking sharp.

Congratulations on getting Eastwind to burn diesel, it was a long long road! Boating is so much nicer when you know the boats going to run...and boy does yours RUN! Maybe you should change the name to Grease Lightning

Watching the video with you doing a test run, it seemed like the engines effortlessly increased speed as you moved the throttles forward.

must be a fantastic feeling after all the time you've put into it!!!!

Very interesting, I’ve spoke to a couple of guys here about it but without using my hands and lots of words it’s hard to describe. I’ll try….

So the boat used to as you hit the throttles, the bow would rise, the boat starts to push a lot water and eventually as the speed increase the bow would level out. Before getting into the 20s kt wise the boat would run a little too proud but eventually levels out.

With the 370s and not an aggressive acceleration the boat gets to 23 kts almost instantaneously without a change in the attitude. To get it to react the way it used to you have to be really slow and deliberate.

So it seems the torque just allows you to push the water out of the way and go instead of the old up and over. We got rid of the trim tabs and the guys doing the work kept asking if I’d want new ones. They dropped the boat in and ran it before I was down there and I think the first thing they said when they got back and called me was, the boat does not need trim tabs.

It’s pretty insane really, it’s hard to describe but you are 100% correct. Carl was nice enough to take me and my family on The Boat and we were completely satisfied with his 210s. Nice diesels good performance but it’s an entirely different animal now and I’m in shock.

how are you doing fuel burn wise? I am wondering if there is a case for being more efficient by having more HP and running it at a lower rpm?

Funny, even with the 270 Cummins I found the boat had the same feeling. It just pushes the water out of the way and gets up and go. I usually push it up slowly also.

The no need for flaps, in what concerns the bow attitude, I understand. With so much power it is easier to obtain the attitude you wish faster and easier.

However, what I don't understand is why wouldn't the flaps be useful, or even necessary, in the case of two people deciding to move from port to starboard for any reason, while cruising. Wouldn't the boat change its left to right angle in such a case? Wouldn't a flaps’ input correct this imbalance?

So far I can only go by my rpm and speed reading vs the Cummins fuel consumption charts. But it seems really good doing the math. I’ll keep a journal next season for more real world numbers.

At this point it seems the extra weight and torque, the boat levels out. A couple guys moving around the cockpit doesn’t move the boat. Now a couple of overweight guys and some really heavy wind on the beam may change my mind in the future. Or if I put a massive fish on one side of the deck. As far as forward to back the tabs don’t seem necessary at all

I think you're talking about a hole shot. The boat is at planning speed almost instantly as you throttle up.

You now have Big Wheels and tons of torque to turn them almost instantly on your boat. You're getting to speed and on plane before the boat has a chance to squat. Heck, your 370 motors are in my friend's forty-something-foot Carver stagecoach...and they push him at a good clip for a monstrosity. Your boat is like a potato chip for those motors.

Gas motors struggled to get into their power curve at higher rpms so the boat would squat a bit as speed came up, rpm came up and the boat would get up on plane and then level off. Diesel has gobs of low-end torque, no more struggle.

As to not being aggressive with throttles...keep in mind the stoke of your throttle gave 0 to maybe 400lbs of torque at 3400rpm with gas motors and now you're at 500lbs or torque at 1400rpm to over 730lbs around 1800rpm. Little increments are large jumps with the diesel compared to the gas motors.

Yes, that was a nice ride with your family, I enjoyed. That day keep in mind I was still in my Sea Trial get used to them mindset, I didn't like the back pressure or exhaust temp so I really babied them up to cruise and kept cruise at 2000 rpm for most of the day. I think on the way back I brought them up to 2100, she's just sloshing around at that speed. Since I made the new dumps, Tony Athens said my exhaust temps are in line, I do cruise her 22-2300 and that is about the point where she starts to get up out of the water a bit more and go. Still no comparison to what you running, but my 210s are pushing nicely.

My wife even commented that these motors just do not seem to struggle at all pushing boat on plane, it just goes.

For next year I sent my spare wheels out for some cup...we'll see what happens. Hopefully a knot or so at cruise and keep a relatively low trolling speed.
Or I have to figure out how to use trolling valve for bass n spoons.


Tabs I believe are beneficial for running 19knots n below. Once over that the need subsides.

In my experience once on a plane the weight of people moving about on Amberjack seems insignificant compared to the forces of water keeping the boat vertical. But if the Bimini is up the boat tends to sail. It feels as though the boat lifts a bit-it's certainly lighter to steer and it leans into the wind.

Peter, I've never been fortunate to put a massive fish on my deck but would gladly put up with the resulting list.

After some additional adjustments, alignment etc the guys are reporting a top end of 36 kts and 23kts at 2100 RPMs which I think is where we will live most of the time.

Pretty darn happy at this point.

That is sweet. 23 knots at 2100 RPM's is perfect. I always found that the 31 really hits it stride at 24 to 25 knots depending on the boat weight. You might find yourself pushing her up a little.

Very Nice Peter, very Nice!

Scooting along at that clip will be great and I know will keep you happy.

What will be even better is knowing the boat is capable of making the trip to your destination and back without problems. And that is coming from someone who had reliable motors, the ethanol years aside.

Carl ironically the boat runs great on one motor now, something I had really become quite capable and now shouldn’t need.

But yes after many years to go out and know you are coming back is pretty awesome. Maybe a low bar but that was the need.

I wasn’t on that run but sounds like she starts to get a little loose. I’m sure I’ll try it a few times next year.

Peter, I have a similar need for gaffs, etc what are you using to pretty up the hole that allows the but ends to go into that panel?

I have an area under the gunnels and I was thinking 0 degree rod holders

I’ve been texting with Carl. I want to make a trip over that way in the spring. Maybe we can get a bunch of local guys to make that run if he has some free dock space for 3-4 hours.

My nephew left for Puerto Rico for a SUNY maritime trip this morning. Had some picture coming out under the VZ. It didn’t look pretty today.

Yes that’s the new training ship. First trip for them, it wasn’t ready during the summer and they flew out to California and went to Hawaii instead.

Almost, the deck will be finished this week. Just finishing putting things back together. New headliner with an access hatch. Insulate the engine boxes, barrier coat the bottom and she’ll be ready when the weather changes for the better.

What we had to do was, Raybo built a belly band, which is also the gutter system. Then take the deck that had unfinished edges that were hidden under the side panels and add a finished edge. A lot of little details in routing things and such. But it’s going to be super functional and have that custom sportfish look when it’s done. I hope.

I really love the open cockpit without those side panels… makes it look so much bigger and cleaner.

I won’t say this post lingered…2 boating seasons. It is a good document of what it takes to convert n do some upgrades compared to buying a turnkey boat. Turnkey I believe would be easier, but you get what someone else wanted.

Yes Carl those cockpit panels being gone is big, to have a nice toe kick, ability to lean your legs etc. really helps out in the transom especially.

I imagine (not for long) having a cooler, tackle, gaffs and an insulated fish bag out of the way.

The one thing I really regret not doing was putting a fresh and black water tanks under the deck, where people would put fish boxes. That would have freed up the entire center below deck space in the cabin. A pretty massive storage space which we lack. I guess there is always phase 2.

Don’t regret it, use the boat and decide if it’s really worth doing. If it is still a regret move forward with phase 2.
Personally I like the cooler for fish on the deck. Fishboxs are nice, but tougher to clean.

It’s no big deal not upset, just in hindsight while the deck was out. I agree the fish box either has to be lift out or macerated. To much of a PITA for me. I’m not a meat fisherman but have a few nice insulated fish bags.

On the other side, life jackets, ditch bag, raft all take up a lot of v berth space. Storage is really a shortcoming of our little tanks. And that’s a good chunk of space where the fresh water tank is.
