First off the tupperware is safe and will remain with the boat
The engine compartments will be the same color as Craig's, that dark gray there now is epoxy primer
The side panels are going back in for now but the panel across the stern is not
There are a 6 fiberglass uprights that tie into 4.5" fiberglass I-beams that support the span of the teak deck
The I-beams that run bow to stern can be unbolted but the uprights will remain.
The exhaust ports will get cut back, not sure yet how long we will end up leaving them.

I've seen larger sportfish with them
the idea behind them is no hardware! No flaps to maintain and you can enlarge the drains to let alot of water out of the cockpit
We made the existing drains more than twice the original size
Water exits quickly and the tube keeps water out when backing down or coming off plane
When I mentioned it to Pete he said Dug's boat has them so it was an easy sell

First off boat looks great. I wish I could do the same.
Second I’ve seen scupper covers like that made out of stainless steel.
They get mounted with screws.
If anybody knows where to get them or who makes them please post.

It would be pretty simple to fabricate out of stainless, in peters case it would put the lower screws right into the deck and the upper screws/bolts visible in the cockpit because no more panel across the stern.
I doubt there are off the shelf products as the size of the drains can vary so much

I like it, much better than the plastic covers. it might be a next year project for me as my work lists (yes plural lists) are too long right now.

Poor man's scupper covers.
Did not want to have to paint the transom.
Used existing hole's.
Will see how they hold up.

That looks great. My transom does need to be painted just not this year. I am going to make the holes bigger in the near future

Peter the boat looks great,after meeting your wife and kids at many rendezvous I would say that you are doing the right thing ,your kids will thank you.I remember when your boys boarded our boat and they said maybe some day dad.keep up the great work,and you will never regret it.we are very happy to see your progress.you and your family will enjoy your boat for decades to come

Neil, our first rendezvous I remember us being invited onto your boat to change a diaper for our now soon to be teenager.
At the time it was a dream to someday slap some 220s or 250s in. To be able really redo everything the right way and drop in 370s is beyond. When Bob let me run Resolute it was super cool but felt similar to how most of us felt when we took a ride on the 61, a dream.
Fast forward through Shannon’s Lupus, my cancer and more recently Shannon almost being killed run over by a car in the city. We’ve definitely had the what the heck are we waiting for wake up call.
We should be done at Raybo in a week or two and it’s going to be like starting with a brand new boat. Minus the interior and exterior cosmetics.

Does one buy a new boat to use
OR
to sit at a dock and look good
If in a position to aquire both all the better, but if a choice of one or the other...without spending outside what you and the family are comfortable with where are you. Dumb question, I know as you already made that decision...I'm just reminding you.
Nothing wrong with chipping away to enjoy the dream in stages.

we were waiting on the glass panel to be made so basically the boat sat for the last few weeks with nothing really being done to it
The panel was a month late. Now that we have the panel work has resumed. This week we have to fabricate the supports for engine box panels, engine boxes, and his existing teak hatches. Then prime and painting the rest of the bilge by this weekend which means hopefully leaving for the mechanic next week
That's a sub floor we glassed under the fuel tank. The factory raw plywood floor was already gone when the boat came and the 2 PVC tubes running under it cracked and absolutely filled with 50+ years of dirt and grime. Now bilge water can flow back and forth without contacting the tank, and the tank area itself drains

Close call in the city 9/11/20, in a crosswalk. Concussion, broken nose, jaw out of place, broken foot, back issues among other things. She was unconscious, got flipped over the car and the intersection video showed she landed on her head and the back tire missed her head by inches. She’s never going to go jogging or garden but she’s still with us so no complaints. On a less important side the person that hit her was an uninsured foreigner so there is no windfall. This part of the project is just about wrapped up, it's hard to imagine it any better than this. Maybe different but Rob is basically handing a brand new boat (the important section) to the mechanic. Deck supports are Fiberglass I beams, bellyband and rudder chelf are coosa and the strut backing pads is 3/4" structural fiberglass.

Sorry to hear about your wife’s accident. Just terrible, hope she is doing somewhat better.
The boat looks great. The work from Raybo is awesome. With all the pictures you and the other guys put up on the board it sure makes the B31 board the ‘go to’ tutorial on how to redo a boat well. So many well done vessels.

Petah, we can't wait to see her finished either!!
One point as it shows on the pics: Isn't this "weird S shaped" outboard vertical engine mount, the one that supports the H bar, a little too thin? Shows thin in the pics, probably it isn't, but just in case...or is it just a deck support?

It's a deck support that offers outboard support to the I Beam. Between the large center bulkhead holding that massive I Beam along with the outboard belly band to support the deck, that S shape is just an added extra in my opinion.
The original design on my boat was marine ply with lots of cutouts along with little 1 x 2" oak uprights to support the deck on my boat. Till the uprights rotted my deck was solid...I can only imagine what this deck will be like.

The transverse I beam is channeled, bolted, sitting on, and glassed to the bulkhead. Then there’s the deck support band running the perimeter. Pete’s deck is 1.5” thick and it has 1.5” supports under it. Yes some parts of it are over 3” thick. The teak deck has zero flex all on its own
Originally that little s section wasn’t going in but I felt it looked funny with nothing and it does support the edge of the transverse beam. In a perfect world it would go all the way to the hull but there would be nothing left of it after running the 6” exhaust along the outboard side. the engine and transmission require most of that area I still think it may even need more trimming as I was just going off photos of other boats.Pete’s mechanic can do what he needs to do with A simple air saw and just touch up the paint as needed.
And all this replaced Carl already explained was basically 50+ year old small pieces of raw wood screwed and bolted together, even the bulkhead was Formica on both sides with a few inches of tabbing along the bottom.
After 50+ years it was easy to see what worked and what needed to be done

I’ve had discussions on the subject of wood in boats and point to 50 year old perfectly good wood in the boat and say “how much better can we get than that?”
I do feel the wood that’s elevated off the hull in a bertram last as long as it did for the fact it wasn’t sitting IN water. Also that the heat of the engines helps dry them out and the high quality of the wood itself

Tony, my uprights from stringer to cross member were Oak. The crossbars the deck sat on were, as you said mahogany. Rayboy is right in that the wood was still in great shape....except where water came into play. My deck was wood sections with wood hatches. It was the uprights around the wood hatches that got wet and eventually rotted. Once the upright rotted the ply deck got some spring. I'm not sure which happened first the spring broke some layers of laminate or water got in destroying some layers. All I know is the last couple of seasons the deck was getting lots of injections of Git-Rot. The mahogany cross beams were mostly good...but lots of holes from the deck going in and out over the years, and sections by rotted oak also fell to decay. I had mahogany and used it on top of the fiberglass upright I used to replace the oak. But in truth...that original lasted a good many years. I changed to glass when I put the fiberglass deck in just because the option was not much different cost-wise and about the same amount of work as I was doing it myself.

Raybo (Rob), can you also share the material on what I believe are the generator and battery shelves (port and starboard)? Epoxied marine ply or starboard perhaps? Looks incredible.
