on board batt chargers

there was a disscusion on batt chargers about 4 months ago. i belive most people agreed on the xantrx charger incuding my self. not the case now with me, first one i had to replace a blown diode, kept as a spare , the new one i put in a few years back just took a crap pulled that one out put the spare back in. took the new one apart and found alot of corrossion tracking on the electronic board, wahed the whole board down with soap and hot water cleaned up the solded beeds on the board re sealed with nail polise and iam good to go again . will keep this as a spar now.tis charger is mounted high on the bulk head and still sees the corrossion, will try and re locate it inside the cabin area.

I had a Charles charger that was in my 1974 31 Bertram when I purchased it 6 years ago and it was the orginal charger. I had to replace it about 4 years ago. I replaced it with another manufacture, it lasted about 6 months. Put it in the trash and purchased another Charles and had know problem since.

I had a similar problem with my Xantrex with rusting connections on the wiring coming out of it. I had the unit mounted in the engine box. Sent the unit back and they sent me a new one which I mounted on the port side panel under the dinette table where it's completely dry. It's been four years now with no problems, plus I can see how its functioning easily when plugged into shore current at the dock. Walter

As far as I can tell, they make the only WATERPROOF charger on the market.

True, but I have had my Xantex and the same Optima gel cell batteries for 6 years and they are still going strong. I'm going to replace the batteries this year as a precaution, but I recommend the charger if you can keep it dry.

for Odyssey batteries they have 2 specific choices they recommend
you use. Having a real high amp output charger and some very
specific voltage ranges for the different charge cycles is very important for AGM batteries, apparently. 10A charger is not enough for Odyssey esp. if you ever get discharged, which I have. I looked at Guest and
didn't think it met the requirements for Odyssey. I ended up mounting a Xantrex 40A inside the cabin (didn't care for the Odyssey recommended
chargers).

just had my boat surveyed and found that my battery charger is a 1980 guest charger and still going strong.i remounted it inside the engine box area but way up high and the port outboard side out of the element...as well as my newblue sea battery switches and bussmann series 185 100 amp breakers.....

There's more elements there than you think. Keep spraying them with CX.
