Neutral Safety Switch

Post by Tony Meola »

Repowered the Boat in 2008/2009 and have not had an issue until now. But the boat started while in gear. The shift was engaged just enough when starting the boat. After searching I can not find the neutral safety switch. I have the 270 Cummins with the ZF Transmissions.

My controls are the Morse MT-3 and according to owners manual the switch should be on the base of the control but I do not see it or wires running to it. The only other place would be on the transmission but I do not see one there.

Can anyone point me to another place the switch might be on the engine?

I am starting to believe the Cummins guys forgot to put it on when we did the repower.

Tony,
I'm pretty sure you need to look at the back of the transmission on the top of the case. Two wires go to it on mine but it's a zf45. I thought the 63 was similar.

Take a pic of your tranny, wait let me rephrase that. Take a pic of your transmission and post to spot the neutral switch.
Very rare I saw control mounted safety switches on diesel powered boats.

Bruce will take a pic over the weekend. I find it hard to believe that the switch is there, since both engines start in gear. I would have figured that maybe one was left off the transmission but both of them.

Can not imagine they forgot to wire them in, but then again anything is possible.

Sounds like you don't have any at all then.
Not difficult to install and wire in.

I will let you know what I find after I get back down to the boat.

Bruce

Here are the pictures of the transmissions. I do not have any wires running to them and I do not see a spot for a neutral safety switch. The transmissions are ZF 220 A.

For some reason I do not think the A model has a spot for a switch.

If not would I be able to add it easily enough to the Morse Control.
