What size seacock/thru hull?

Post by CamB25 »

It's been a while since I cut a hole in my hull, but JohnV8r is inspiring me to cut!

I will have a live well and probably a raw water wash down pump. The live well pumps come with a second port to feed the wash down pump from a single seacock/thru hull pick up. My live well is small, so the pump has a 3/4" pipe size.

Should I use a 3/4" seacock or step up to a larger size? https://www.groco.net/products/valves-s ... fbv-valves

The seacock will be located in the old I/O compartment and up from the keel so as not to disturb the flow to the prop area. Can I use a simple thru hull or do I need a scoop? https://www.groco.net/products/fittings ... ries-scoop

Raw water strainer, or is this overkill? https://www.groco.net/products/raw-wate ... arg-series

thanks

I had a 3/4 thru hull for my wash down and live well
no scoop, but I did have a inline strainer before the pump
live well and wash down was controlled by a y valve
I used the shureflow super blaster 5.5 gpm

Thanks, Charlie. Where was your thru hull located on the boat? Any issues with water flow at speed?

thanks

I have a 3/4 inch pick up right under the cabin hatch just behind the door. No scoop and picks up water just fine while running.

As long as the pump is self priming good changes are you won't need a scoop.
But I have seen self priming pumps have issue at speed and if put were turbulence at speed is a factor.
