New to me outboard - shipping?

Post by CamB25 »

I'm closing a deal on a slightly used G2 300 outboard in the next few days. The engine will be crated in the OEM crate in Largo, FL. I need to ship it north to either Wilmington, NC or Springfield, VA (DC). Any suggestions? Anyone successfully use one of the shipping auction sites?

I think I have book ended the equation. UPS LTL to my driveway with a liftgate is $950. I can drive down and pick it up myself for $300 in gas and 28 hrs of seat time. I wonder if there is a better option.

thanks

I have had good luck with Uship.com.

It works like ebay and you can see the ratings and completed jobs of the people bidding your request. You get to see their rig and can ask questions. I had a 1957 Mack B42 truck shipped 250 miles for $700 a few years ago.

I would expect that to be $400 job for someone coming back empty from South FL.

I asked here about getting a couple of motorcycles shipped. I used Uship. Be sure your shipper has lots of feedback/references. The guy I used was great.

I am planning to be in Lakeland 4/7 leaving on 4/9. I am taking a Tahoe but if you tell me in time I can tow a small utility trailer down and bring it back to Atlanta if that will help? Todd

Run? no way! Just getting the first primer coats blocked down. Dust is flying!

I used UPS freight to ship the engine. Things got a little interesting when UPS said they lost my shipment, but it turned up after a couple of days...right where it was supposed to be. They ended up charging me $200 less than their original quote - why? no clue, but I didn't ask questions. $425 to ship it from Tampa to Manassas, VA UPS distribution center where I picked it up. Seemed like a good deal.

I gave up on photobucket..too many ads. I need another web host for pictures.

Glad to hear it is still moving forward.

I look forward to seeing her in the water. She will be one of a kind.

I have been getting the Bertram itch again and been keeping an half an eye out for a project.

Thanks. I am spending some quality time on the boat. It took 4 solid days to fill pin holes block out the primer...just on the cap! I'm ready to spray more 545 and block some more. It should be ready for topcoat after this next round of primer. I used hull guard extra on the hull sides. That stuff is so freaking hard it's ridiculous. Eats abrasives like an elephant eats peanuts. Might take a few days to block that down to 150 and then it will be ready for 545. Inner hull and deck are in first primer coats. Center console and helm seat box are through 2 primer coats and almost ready for topcoat. It's coming along!

There seems to be some good boats for sale this summer. Buy something already restored! :)

Here's a shot in the boat shed from Saturday. I lined the bay with plastic..sort of a poor man's paint booth!

I can only imagine how many times you have been up and down those steps on the stepladder! I am assuming you decided not to have someone else paint it? Todd

Ha! That ladder is for guests. I use a trampoline!

I'm attempting to paint it. Spent this year's boat fund on the engine.
