Scope of Ethanol Related Repairs

Post by JohnV8r »

Hey Guys,

Tank has been ordered, and heads are being pulled next week.

Questions: Do the carburetors need to be rebuilt?

Do I need to replace the fuel pumps?

Thanks in advance!

A lot depends on how long these engines have sat around doing nothing... Having said that, it's not a big deal to do it yourself and the kits aren't expensive so it would be cheap insurance...

Electric?!... I wouldn't replace those... Just keep a spare on board... Just keep a spare on board... Even if they have sat for a long time... Mechanical?!... Again, it depends on the above question... When mechanical pumps leak internally your engine will be "making oil" and your oil will get diluted... If they leak externally you're creating a dangerous situation... Having said that, it's not a big deal to do it yourself and the pumps aren't expensive so it would be cheap insurance...

John,
Have your mechanic look at them. Most marine pumps can be taken apart to look at the diaphragms for degrading or cracks.
If you ran good filters, carbs should have no issues. Easy enough to pop the tops and check for debris in the bowl.

I had my Carters rebuilt by these guys. They test run them and guarantee them.
