Batteries

Post by Capt.Frank »

I know it's been covered. I have 3208 Na have used 2-8D one for each engine for 20 years. Should I switch from 2 8-D's CA 1700 amps, CCA 1400 amps to 2 groups 31 CA 1170 amps CCA 950 amps One for each engine and 1 deep cycle for house. The 8D outside port engine is getting heavier and a pain to replace every 5 years. I was thinking of building a new battery box between the engines and put all 3 batteries there.
I mainly troll so excited engines run all the time. Am I making a mistake dropping reserve amps ?

Frank the Interstate 31's are 900 reserve per battery. Two would give you 1800 reserve.

I would tell you two 31's for each engine.

I replaced the 8ds on Crows Nest (8.2 Detroits) with group 31 Sears and batteries. They supposedly have about 1100 cca per battery. I haven't had a problem. The local battery guy has lead acid marine batteries that are group 31 and are 1100 cca. The boat show price for those was $100. I'll try those next.

I have 2 batteries, and just leave them on "both" on the switch a lot. Very simple set up, but I'm not canyon running and it works fine. It also worked for Doug when she did venture offshore.

I used to be able to lift the 8ds out. Last time I did it a few years ago, all I could think about was whether my back would survive It did, but I'm done with 8ds

Good luck

John

Hey John, when you get into the mid 60's even the 31's start to get heavy to pull in and out.
