Fishing Question - LI Sound Albacore

Post by John F. »

My Dad fishes out of Mattituck inlet in his 22' Edgewater (turned 90 last Friday, and still goes out fishing by himself). He told me that a few nights ago, he ran into schools on top of what he was told were Albacore by someone else out there. He described them as little torpedoes flying through the water--faster fish than he's ever seen. He said he threw poppers, plastics on jig heads, metal (kastmasters/hopkins), and never got a hit. He retrieved liked he'd do for stripers. The other boat never hooked up either.

Any advice? Particular lure? Retrieve?

There have always been bonito in the sound, but I've never seen albacore. The bonito can often be caught on baby bunker.

Deadly Dicks...

I have a good friend who has multiple fly caught bonito records out of port Jeff. False Albacore and Bonito are common this time of year.

Go really tiny on the DDs or something similar and try a super fast retrieve, sometimes it's as fast as possible other times it requires a pause and restart where they hit on the drop.

Agreed on bonito and allbes this time of year. Over here in Western Sound (port Washington)I've had them each year the last 5 years, mid Sept through end Oct, depending on bait source (which this year is BOOMING..rain bait, peanuts, spearing, etc). On fly, use tan or charteuse surf candy, on spin use deadly dicks like Pete said as well as small unweighted white sluggos, retrieved silly fast. Good luck.
