Fuel issue ? Cummings 4BTA3.9M250

Post by Keith Poe »

Been sitting for months

Primed it and seems to hold prim but cracking injectors on the running motor or the not running motor no fuel comes out.

Filters and lines are full.

Starting fluid third try kicked a little.

Fuel pump ?

Pressure gage where to connect ?

Fuel return line any help crack it under starting ?

Checked all the power seems good.

Thanks Guys

How did you prime the engine?!... What type of transfer pump do you have?!... Diaphragm or piston type?!... Have you checked your oil?!... Does it smell of diesel and is it "thinner" then it should be?!...

PM me your email address and I'll email you section 5 (fuel system) of the trouble shooting & repair manual...

Frankly it shouldn't have to be primed unless the system opened.

Always welcome...

Sounds like you may have the Bosch injection pump... That one has a small priming pump on it...

That is, of course, a correct observation...

Make sure the pick up tube is good. It might be clogged at the bottom.

Keith...

Do your 4BTs have integral air preheaters.. as my 6BT does? If so.. Do not use ether starting fluids!

Keith,
With all the high temps you have been having out there, I would make sure you don't have algae blocking the lines, eithet that or you have lost the prime in the fuel system also check to see if the fuel vent is clear, no hornets nests in the line.

Thanks for your help. What about the black smoke coming out the exhaust that would indicate the fuel is combusted but it seems it doesn't want to stay running possible electric

Burnt up a wiring harness

I repaired it to make it in

Other than that ran fine I'm assuming the salt screwed something else up so far everything I check has power function

I'm not sure electrics are your problem... IIRC these are old school non electronic diesels... You only need electrics to start the engine (i.e. turn the starter)... You MIGHT have one that has an electric lift pump... IF electrics are your problem and you have one of those that might be the place to look at...

Having said that, and assuming my recollection is correct, I would still redo the wiring... There shouldn't be that many wires... If my recollection is bad and this is an "electronic" diesel I'd definitely go for a new (or used but known to be good) harness...

The fact that you're getting the right voltage doesn't mean you're getting the right amps... A partially busted wire will still carry the right voltage but won't be able to supply the right amps...
