Have a B31 with stock 454's was wondering what the manufacturer and model number is for the transmission? Have been told they are Borg Warner?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Normal temperature on a 454 mercruiser
Much thanks for all the info, will check with an IR temp meter, but checking ground on gauge might be a good place to start.

Re: Normal temperature on a 454 mercruiser
Thanks, since the meter is bouncing all the way up as soon as it starts I'm thinking maybe something is wired incorrectly on the meter side. There appears to be plenty of raw water being pumped through and the exhaust feels cool to the touch at the risers. Pulled the thermostat out just to make sure...

Normal temperature on a 454 mercruiser
Have a new engine in my B31, cooling system plumbed with FWC cooled manifolds and raw water cooled risers. What should be the expected normal operating temperature? At idle after warm up the meter is sitting at a little over 220 degrees. My old raw water cooled engine would run around 160 degrees, p...

Re: Engine plumbing
Thanks much, your experience echoes my concern about the difference in operating temperature. Since the engine was already plumbed for FWC manifolds I have decided to at least set it up initially that way and run it for a while to see how it performs. Easy enough to convert it back to raw water if I...

Re: Engine plumbing
Thanks to all I am convinced that FWC the manifolds is the way to go. One more plumbing issue, the boat I believe has the original Y where the two exhaust lines come together. It looks really rusty and corroded from the outside but seems solid all the way around. Since that Y sits below the water li...

Engine plumbing
I have completed my engine swap on my B31. Thanks to all who responded, Information was quite helpful. Now I'm trying to decide how I want to plumb the exhaust and coolant ines on my replacement engine. Original engine was raw water cooled all the way, never had an issue just flushed when I came bac...

Re: B31 transmission
Thanks
I have the engine part of the project sorted out, my problem is I don't know which transmission came off which engine. Does anyone know if they are interchangeable? This the original,
I believe Borg Warner is the manufacturer.
Thanks

Re: B31 transmission
Thanks Patrick I know you know Bertram better than anybody but I'm pretty sure one engine does counter rotate. I have a 78 with the original Merc big blocks, I know there is a different firing order on each engine and just to make sure I went to the garage and hand spun both transmissions clockwise ...

Re: Engine swap on B31
Thanks, my problem is finding a lift apparatus that would work like a fork lift while boat is sitting in the water, area options are more like a chain pulley from above. Looks like I can gain a few inches if we release the trans mounts and slide it back towards the stern, not sure if that will buy m...

Engine swap on B31
I'm in the process of swapping out a Mecruiser 454 in my B31 and would like some advice on best method of doing this while the boat is sitting in the water. Looks like we can, block the back of the engine, unbolt the bell housing and slide the engine forward while it is lifted, problem looks like th...

B31 transmission
I have a 78 B31 with Mercruiser 454's, I have a spare set of engines and transmissions that came with the boat. I know the port engine is counter rotation, what I'm not sure of is, are the transmissions specific to the rotation of the engine, or do they not care which side they run on? I want to use...

B31 rub rail
Anyone out there have experience replacing the original rub rail on a B31? I have seen some units available on line, look like PVC replacements for the original aluminum unit. Have looked up in the bow and the fasteners are not screws but bolts with nuts on the interior. Can imagine if same entire l...

exhaust for a B31 with gas 454's
Coming out of my exhaust manifolds I have hose going to two fiberglass elbows that then run to a combining pipe that ties both exhaust lines together before it hits the muffler. That combining piece appears to be constructed out of iron. Question, does anyone know if they make a fiberglass replaceme...

Cockpit flooring
I hope someone has experience pulling up the center panel from a B31 cockpit floor. I am hoping there is some way to get access to the fuel tank without completely dismantling the entire cockpit. It looks like the center panel has a lip that rests under the starboard and port panels. Is there some w...

West coast tank resource
Hey Guys
Has anyone done a tank replacement for a B31 on the left coast, preferably in So Cal? All of the resources I have come across are on the East Coast and I would like to deal with someone local to get the job done.
Thanks Much

The Boat is in Newport Beach, it is a 78 31 FBC with a Tuna tower. It has been under used for several years but seems to be in good shape. I'm used to doing most of my own work on 350 Crusaders so 454 Mercs are somewhat foreign but things are coming around. Dealing with old gas and a cranky Onan gen...

Hello New to the forum, new proud owner of a 78' B31 with gas engines. The boat has been sitting for a while, 3-4 years. Has never had ethanol laced gas in the tanks or run through the engines. The boat still has the original fiber glass tanks which look visual pretty clean internally with no exteri...
