East river can be funky with debris, but pretty.
Once into Long Island Sound, it is easy and Port Washington is a good stop point, as is Huntington.
The best scenario is to arrive one way and depart the other.

There's a spot called Billy's By the Bay in Greenport ... (in one of the other marinas, the chain, can't think of name) ...food is good. He could probably do a clambake kinda thing. I will ask him over the weekend if he does catering and try to get some rates.

Look locally, the gov authorities auction commercial grade whalers once they come out of warrantee.
I have a retired Florida FWC whaler in NY.
Nothing in smaller boats is safer or holds value like a whaler.
Mr Hunt was a genius !!

At different points, I've owned:
2 - 13s
3 - 15s
2 - 17s
and presently have a commercial 21.
I really like the 18 Outrage ... easy to trailer, better in a chop than a 17 and all Whalers hold value well.

I/We moved to Lauderdale because my wife and I were both working there.
I got laid off, she still works there, so we are kinda locked to Lauderdale, plus we bought a house with plenty of dock space and living space that we are pretty happy with.
So, we have a commuting marriage.
