Help with Battery Cable Sizing
I have a pair of Volvo Penta TAMD41P 200 HP engines in a 29' Phoenix. My starter is rated at 3kW at 12 VDC. So, I think that translate to an amp requirement of: A = W/V = 3000/12 = 250 A When I account for a round trip length about 20 feet from battery plus to switch to starter plus and from the sta...

VW Diesels in Bertram? Need Advice Please.
Hi Guys, Still trying to get my 31 Express repowered in Lantana. I have a potential lead on a pair of brand new Volkswagon TD225-6 engines complete with Twin Disc 1.5:1 Gears. They come complete with wiring harnesses, gages, key starts, etc. The spec for them is below: http://www.vw-m.de/index.php?i...

Anyone Use Prisma Composite Preforms for Stringers/Bulkheads
Has anyone ever used the Prisma Composites preforms for stringer and bulkhead repairs. Thinking of using them on a waterlogged Grady White I am going to rebuild. Wondering if these would work on my Bertram 31. Check out the Ship Shape TV video on their website. It looks good????

I have hull 242 in Lantana from 1962. Still trying to get the restoration going; got distracted with a new Whaler retrofit I just completed. I bought my B31 from guy at Murrelles across Dixie from my shop in Lantana where I have the boat. Still saving funds to get going with new Cummins. Spencer, le...

Chrome Refinisher in SE Florida
I seem to recall someone stating there was a good source for getting boat parts re-chromed in SE Florida. I think it was in Pompano Beach. Does anyone know a good source in SE Florida? Thanks. Joe Z

Scot, Thanks for your opinion. I was going back and forth on the gears also. The 63a vs. the 220. My Cummins rep for Florida assures me the 63a will be fine. It is easy to convince me since the 63a is about $2K less than the 220 or ~$4K for two. I can use this savings towards shaft change, props, an...

Last Minute Jitters Before Buying New Engines & Gears
Hi All, I would really appreciate some advise before a big investment. I have been studying this website for the last 2 years and bought a 1962 31 Express last summer 08. About to buy engines and want to make sure this is what I need. I know many don't like the lower HP Cummins but I am fine with th...

Thanks a bunch Walter. You have given me great info in past. Yes, my shafts are 1.25". Pete Fallon did a survey on it and said they were 1.25". However, I am going to measure myself to be sure. Do you have the exact model #s/specs for your gears. I'm confused about this because one dealer is saying ...

Cummins 6BT 210 Questions
Abandoned ideal of selling my 31 and going forward with repower. I am speaking w/ some Cummins dealers and have a few questions that I think you guys can easily answer. 1. One distributor says the 6BT factory recon is 210 HP; another says 220 HP. They are the same engine as far as I can see from the...

I'm still trying to figure out the Cummins engines so here it goes: 1. What HP are these engines? 2. Is the tube on the top right of the engines the after cooler? 3. Is the small tank w/ fill cap on front of engine the fresh water cooler for the after cooler? 4. What is difference between 6BT and 6B...

Check out Accurate Boss Magnums. I use them for deep snapper & grouper fishing in Tortugas. Have high gear ratios, super smooth drags, aircraft aluminum, ball bearings and drags on both sides of spool, large line capacity, and overall super heavy duty. They are awesome but may a bit expensive. Look ...

Cummins 6bt Question
Hi All, I know this is a "tourist" question but here it goes. The Cummins 6BT 5.9 comes in several horsepower. I want to put a pair of 210s in my B31. What is the difference between these engines on ebay and the 210 versions? Can you modify them easily to reduce horsepower? Second, what is the exact...

Hi Kipp, Do you have any pics of reinforcing the transom and installing the engine bracket on Targeted Species - your boat looks great and I espicially like the pics at boat ramp. What do you all think about putting twin 300 Suzikis 4-strokes on a 1962 31 Express. I have one on Swap & Sell for sale but am still considering options. Anyone have any pics of a 31 w/ outboards? Has it been done? Thanks. Joe

Bertram 31 on old Flipper TV Show
Hi Everyone, When I was young, my favorite TV show was Flipper. Anyway, today, we bought the CD set Season 1 to show my kids (age 6 and 8) which aired in 1964. The very first episode of Season 1 has a 31' Bertram in it. There are multiple scenes both inside and outside. There is also a cool scene wh...
