Thanks Patrick. Marsha Kosh told me to say hello to you and she appreciated what you did for Dave.

I guess my big job turned into a bigger one :(

My guess is the mounts were 20+ years old. They were not factory motor mounts from volvo penta. My TAMD 60C's were built in the 80's. I spent all day this past weekend trying to line up the engine to the shaft with no success. The whole engine definitely moved inward towards center of boat because t...

Update: I had to replace all 4 motor mounts and now I need to move the engine to align the two couplings together for tranny and prop shaft. I've got two port o powers ready to try it tomorrow. The engine is at least 1/4" to 1/2" off towards the center of the boat and it is my port engine. One of th...

Well, I went down to the boat again today and I definitely found the problem. the back port motor mount is structurally (rusted through) starting to fail. When these mounts were originally installed, someone put a small wood screw as a marker on each corner (diagonally on each mount). The upper port...

So, if I decide to try moving the engine to align the shaft center of shaft log, I uncouple the shaft from the tranny? Can it be done without uncoupling if I leave everything together (besides the rubber hose around packing and shaft log), loosen up the motor mounts and adjust to center shaft log th...

misalignment in shaft log overheating stuffing box

Need some advice on the proper steps here to possibly realign my shaft on port engine or, if i can get away with a longer rubber hose over the stuffing box. Description of the problem with my limited knowledge as follows: 1. Rubber hose for packing body & gland was leaking badly on side mounted to t...

I did not mean to bash Dave in any way. He was one hell of a guy and he knew that boat like the back of his hand. Didn't have a mean bone in his body. Unfortunately, with Dave passing away suddenly, I did not get much time with him to learn the ins and outs of his boat while he was healthy. Dave was...

I have the transmission pressure gauge ground connected to the starter ground so i'm guessing that wouldn't be the issue. I'll see if I can take the sending unit out for the fuel tank too. Oh, another reason I didn't get the boat out much this past year was when diesel fuel was pushing 6 bucks a gal...

Dave Kosh's old boat "Can Do It" update

I have not been on for a while but this past year I have been trying to learn the boat and fix things that are unsafe or non-functional. I am finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel! I was a complete novice about what to do on a Bertram but I am slowly but surely getting more comfortable ...

So if the output normally stays in the 40 to 50 amp range even though it can put out a max of 94, the single belt should still be fine? There is a 1500 watt inverter for a microwave that we rarely ever use and that is the only non-DC power on the boat.

Bruce, I took it to a local alternator rebuild shop and told him the max rpm I would normally run the engines at was 2500 rpm. I didn't think about the extra belt because the originals just have a single belt. So you're saying over 80 amp I'll need two belts? Don't wanna run offshore thinking I impr...

Alternator, Charging and isolator

I am in the process of rebuilding two non-functional 50 amp alternators that are being rebuilt to 94 amps. Currently, the boat setup is that I have a main 8D 12 volt battery for each engine and an auxiliary battery for a backup. Normally, the switches for each engine are set on the one battery for e...

Even though I just bought the boat, I fished in it with the prior owner (Dave Kosh) several times and the boat has twin TAMD60C's that are 250 hp turbo diesels. They performed well on every trip I went on with Dave without any problems. Both engines have less than 1600 hours and the boat runs at abo...

coolant question

Do you guys use coolant of a regular 50/50 standard anti freeze/distilled water only or do any of you use a coolant with rust inhibitors added? Just want to know because i'll probably change out the coolant soon on the two volvo diesels on the b31 and was wondering if I should keep it the same as it...

New Member, Friend of Dave Kosh

Hello, I'm Brian Fenske and new to the site. Myself and two good friends purchased Dave's old boat "Can Do It" and I wanted to join the site to learn as much as I can about the boat including how improve and maintain the boat. Looking forward to making new friends and "learning the ropes". I live in...
