Intreresting B-31 Renovation

Not sure if the link will work, but this is an interesting B-31 center console outboard. Obviously the power choice is problematic given the demise of Evinrude, but the lines and layout of the boat look great to me.

Re: tear down finally begins

Shannon, I'm the guy that said "...the deck is original...", but based on your tear-down, I stand corrected! I had seen several renovated 31's where the crafstman had cut and glassed a baitwell into the original transom deck, and assumed yours was similar. ("ASSUME", makes an ASS out of U and ME). B...

Rick, Regarding the port and starboard hull sides being assymetrical, the original Bertram boat was hand built out of wood the old fashion way:wood framed, planked and finished in plywood. When it performed so well in the Miami-Nassau ocean race, Dick used that actual wooden hull as a "plug" to crea...

Interesting thread about these rare Bertrams. Jeremy, I agree with Daniel that the ad incorrectly refers to the model as a 25' model; I have an old ad that confirms Daniel's observation of a Bertram 24' Pop-Up Camper model. The bow cap would pop up and elevate canvas curtains creating a tent like en...

They were built super strong in 1964 with an extra thick fiberglass layup, so you have a very sturdy boat! I had a 1962 model and later a 1972 model. Based on Doug's knowledge of the earlier models, you miight not find the number anywhere on the existing boat. The cabin sole hatch might have been di...

Shannon, remind me the build year of Bucktail. I believe it was 1972 when the government required hull numbers to be applied on the transom just under the rub rail on the stbd side. Prior to that most hull #s were glassed into the hull under one of the v-berth hatches. Other places I've seen hull #s...

I visited on the Bucktail with the 2nd owner in Georgetown, SC, somewhere around 2005, and the boat was in excellent shape. As Carl commented, "there has to be a story there" as to how a boat that was customized and repowered so well could fall into a state of disrepair. With that said, as I get old...
