Those engines are raw water cooled. Take em to salt water and they'll start to deteriorate quickly. 454 has a thin wall in the head that salt water loves to munch on.
Throw a freshwater cooling system on em if you want em to last.

About 50% of those control systems were as you describe Rocky and where most diesels are today. All of those systems have a default on low voltage that shuts down somewhere in the 11.5 vdc. Never saw a 6LP with glazing issues, but it does need to be run out from time to time. 3900 top rpm loaded makes a great 3400 to 3600 top cruise rpm.
