First, putting 2000 hours on an engine in one year will probably do less damage to it than putting 500 hours on over ten years. Second, most of those old engines that are still in service didn't have aluminium parts in them. Many are also fresh water cooled. Now as for the life span of the 350.....w...

The average boater puts 35 hours a year on their engines and will never wear out an outboard, BB gas engine, or even come close to the long term benefits of diesel. Simply not true. Time is as big (or bigger) an enemy as running hours. Dissimilar metals sitting in salt water=bye bye sixty large. Su...

Just a quick word of caution, from someone who has thrown caution to the wind on more than one occasion. One Thanksgiving day some years back, I was taking my boat from Hampton Bays Long Island to Newburyport Massachusetts.....alone....in a gale. As I was running the southern edge of Buzzards Bay, t...

There are stories about bow pulpits on cheap boats that have ripped off, taking a chunk of the foredeck with them, when the bow gets buried in choppy seas. If I am not mistaken I think Pascoe mentions this in one of his books. Talk about ruining your day! Still my guess about the Bert that sank a f...

License Plate
I was passing by LaGuardia Airport yesterday and spotted a tan SUV with a NY license plate BERTRAM31. Not a frame.....the plate itself.

You guys with engine converted sets, what are you using for govenors to keep the speed constant for proper voltage and frequency output as the loads are applied? Mine was a gen set out of an old 50 something foot Hatt. With very minor adjustment, it pretty much just made 59 or 60 cycles no matter t...
