That's interesting, when I left my engine/prop guys to their own resources they suggested 18 x 24s which I have over-ruled based on the information here. My guys tell me they have been getting better than factory results for all their other engine/prop installs but none on B31s. But I just can't see...

Props for Hull No. 330 with Yanmar315s?
From searching the old board the consensus seems to be for our B31fbc Yanmar 315s 2.03:1 ZF63a that the props should be 4 bladed 20" x 23". Any comments? We expect to be at the lower end of weight estimates, early hull but no generator, air, desal or tower - a day boat with teak cockpit & moderate f...

Hull No. 330 Repower
Thanks for all your help with technical information everybody, we've settled on the Yanmar 315s and they go in the week starting December 4 in an undercover shed. We've got a promise of two day turn around on the shafts allowing us to measure exactly when everything is in situ. We'll open a book on ...

Scot, Just going through the very same thing. We are glassing a f/g pipe through the transom and fitting a flap as well as fitting a riser to the exhaust by the engine. Not so much the momentary back pressure but to avoid any chance of a gutful of water coming back into the engine. Maybe over-cautio...

Tip Clearance
Could I please have some views on what the minimum propeller tip clearance should be to the hull for a Yanmar 315 installation, ZF63A 2:1 3 bladed on our 63 fbc. I always believed 10% of dia was OK but I'm getting conflicting advice. Also, I've searched the old site for 3 bladed propeller sizes but ...

Hull No. 330
We got a decent pair of eyes under the port bunk, wet it down and our date is 04...05...1963. Here we call that the 4th of May but where it was written I think that's the 5th of April which ties in with Mikey's advice.

Thanks for the correction Capt. Patrick, that would have been weird! The flying shot of Buddy Boy shows a similar hue. The President of the paint committee has the casting vote and it looks like white, Bahama Green boot-top and light green a/foul - and that was before seeing your late vote Phil. Wha...

Hull Color - You vote, we paint!
We are going to paint the hull topsides on our 1963 fbc. The superstructure is white/white, the antifouling is green. The choice for the hull is White.....a very pale Buff....or....Fighting Lady Yellow.
You guys decide, we can't.
Thanks

Almost ready to start the repower to diesel on our 1963 fbc. We have hull side air vents a little over half the size/volume of those on 'Buddy Boy" so we are planning to double up - then I noticed that a lot of boats on this site and on Yachtworld have NO hull side vents at all. My experience is eng...

Scot, You've obviously done a lot more than most on this topic, so I hope my suggestion of another alternative is not a red-herring. If ultimate fishability is not the priority then a single fixed surfacing propellor would resolve a lot of performance/weight issues. I have seen and driven simple fix...

I second that sentiment. I've owned a lot of boats & driven hundreds more. I was in the boating industry for 25 years and I co-owned a 52ft Ray Hunt Custom Sportfish (built 1971) that was really just a big version of the 31 and of all of them she is the only one to come close to the 31, but our 31 i...

Bruce, I see the 250s are referred to as the 260s as well by Steyr on their website, so sounds like the 280 & 300 are the same. Steyr
Bruce,
In looking at the Steyrs here they tell me they only have the 250hp and the next one will be 280hp on the same block. They can't tell me when the 280 will be released though, do you know? Do you agree with these being the correct hp?
Thanks

John, I had a very good run with Hynautic controls in the 1980s. We used the plastic lines - no problems really. The fluid we used was a water/glycol mix (i.e. anti-freeze) rather than a hydraulic fluid, so if you had a problem it would be hard to run out of fluid. I'd try fixing it if you can and I...

Living in Hope
Well yes and no. I'm sure they don't fit, I guess I was just hopeful. I saw a pic of the other engines and they looked like 6V53s to me. I'm pretty sure the 4V53s are two pots per side, so they are much shorter than the 471TAs, also at a dry weight of 1,800lbs they are just too much metal. Thanks fo...

John, Congratulations on your 31 purchase. I am intrigued by the engines and wonder whether you could send a photo of the engines in the engine bay so I can re-assess the chances of fitting a pair of 4-71TAs into a 1963 31. My email address is nd@2088.com.au and I'd appreciate as many low-res shots ...

Can we fit 471-TAs in a '63
Anyone got any knowledge of Detroit 471-TAs in a 31. The measurements look too big, but I'm not sure and the engines are a plane trip away. The guy selling them tells me they measure Length 1530mm (60ins), width 830mm(32ins), overall height 920mm (36.22) and height above top of mounts 700mm (27.55in...
