Sounds like it could also be a dirty bottom or dirty air filters? Have you checked those at a minimum? The soot could obviously be a number of things but sounds like they are working a bit hard on the get go and once under way.

I went through this very thing about 7 years ago with my B28. I bought motors from Michigan Motorz and did a few component swaps. Happy to talk you through it if you’d like. Price was very reasonable and HP was up around 300. Higher revenge Vortec engines. Pm me or send me a note and we can connect....

Thanks Jason and Rick. Trying to determine if I should go with a combo battery like Jason’s or deep cycle vs. starting. I have starting batteries now for the Cummins but two are tired.

Thank you guys. With the fuel tank there it is very difficult to get a wrench on the nuts on the current backing plate. I think I will consider some of these tricks or consider a spacer that can allow the current base to be utilized? That would be viable but the plate would now stick up about 3/4 of...

I see many people utilizing a small Honda portable on the few occasions they need to have the creature comforts. A lot less of an investment and one less thing to maintain and install. And, they are quiet.

Rocky - true but the 350's are simple, plentiful and inexpensive. You can run them hard in a marine environment and they hold up (my experience).

Very sorry to hear. I used to see him every summer when he would run the Bertram over to the Vineyard. I just spoke to his brother in law and apparently he was in Punta Gordy building a house with a dock.. RIP Scott.

I just bought a 31 and it came with a 4 person Switlik along with a nice stainless cradle that I just removed and was planning to sell. It might be a solution as it is relatively light. If interested, ping me.

Try sticking a screwdriver into the hole and break the old zinc debris free and the water will come out. I often have this on my gas engines.

Looking at a 1980 B31 and went to Boat US for insurance. They covered my B28 but told me they don't insure anything over 40 years of age now.
