A previous owner rigged Amberjack for commercial salmon trolling in the 1980’s. He did his own work and it was crude including the inside steering. http://i.imgur.com/EWKTtgf.jpg The steering station has been bugging me for the many years I’ve owned the boat and this winter I removed it. It was a ch...

Last summer while cruising at dusk I hit a submerged log. Did all the immediate checks once it happened. Pulled the boat the next day, did a visual inspection and saw that the starboard shaft had been "polished" The shafts seem to be where drift winds up. This is the second year I’ve found wood fib...

Re: Pulling the shaft
Ugh...a long solid coupling. Almost too long to be standard unless you have a double-tapered shaft...although the set screws would be the oddball. But maybe used to secure the nut. In either case, those screws need to be backed off. Good eye Carl, it is a double tapered shaft. The flange separated ...

Thanks for the good advice, especially for the warning about shaft pullers damaging the transmission. The compression collar on my starboard shaft needs to be replaced when I haul the boat in a couple weeks. It will take about 12" clearance to remove the old collar and slide on the new one. Yannis asked "Holding tank Im not familiar with, what is the law up there? It’s your boat do it your way. We all use our boats differently. Plumbing in a head means plumbing in a holding tank. Holding tanks need a deck pump out fitting and an on board T-12 bypass. It’s a lot to squeeze under the cabin sole of a Bertram so it’s a commitment. If your wife is OK with a porta...
