Re: Mercruiser 350 intake manifold

Thank you all for the responses. Have ordered new gaskets and will attack tomorrow. Have picked up a 1/4" inch NPT with hose barb, so I should be able to collect coolant. Steve.

Mercruiser 350 intake manifold

Have oil leak in rear end of intake manifold on Mercruiser 350 after having done extensive work. Questions: 1. If I pull the intake manifold without draining coolant, might not coolant run out into the valley? If so, any suggestions on draining coolant other than draining into bilge? What is the siz...

Re: Blown head - worth repairing?

Thank you for your thoughts - very helpful. Engine is stripped; heads come off today. For a 72 year old who has never been past an oil filter, this is exciting stuff.

Blown head - worth repairing?

1984 Bertram FBC; 350's. Due to operator error, starboard engine was intermittently overheating. Eventually full overheat with radiator cap release. Determined apparent cause to be mis-plumbed expansion tank. Corrected, replaced coolant, engine ran OK at dock. Subsequent sea trial showed white exhau...

Re: Mercruiser 350 starting problem

Rebuild Man totally blameless. The coil element stayed on intake manifold during carb rebuild. The mistake was made way back in March when my good friend and I painted the engine, and, in so doing, removed the coils and housings from the intake manifold. Mea Culpa.

Re: Mercruiser 350 starting problem

Hooray, Hooray! I believe we have found the problem - the housing of the divorced metallic coil housing was put in backwards, so that the linkage to the choke assembly was installed on the wrong side of the coil. As the engine warmed up, the choke plate was closed more firmly, not opened. Currently ...

Re: Mercruiser 350 starting problem

In response to Scott's posting, I believe your assumptions A-D are all correct. Have further data to report: when engines run for 15 minutes and reach normal temperature, the choke plate on the primary barrels on both carburetors opens approx. 45 degrees. When I shut off the engine for 1-2 minutes a...

Re: Mercruiser 350 starting problem

Thank you for the replies to date. Took the carbs out and had them rebuilt. Reinstalled and still have the same problem: both engines start well when cold and run smoothly. I warm them up and then turn off, and cannot restart. They crank but no start. Next proposed step is to get fuel pressure teste...

Re: Mercruiser 350 starting problem

Morning after update:

Thanks for the replies. Both engines started this am. Will do another extended run at dock, while I am blowing out vent line. Will post results as they occur.

Mercruiser 350 starting problem

Just reinstallled my Mercruiser 350s after 9 months of repairs (rotten stringers and bulkheads, rusted oil pan). Engines started well,I ran them dockside for an hour. All readings normal. Turned them off for a minute, and then neither engine would restart, even after several attempts. Boat is a B28, ...

Re: Prop rotation on B-28

When I suggested switching the props, I meant switching to props port and starboard, so that the props are attached to their matched engines. Spoke with Todd at Blair Propeller in Stuart, FL. He identified two possible effects of having the props turning towards the centerline: 1. Their combined eff...

Re: Prop rotation on B-28

Thanks for the reply Harry; I had pulled my mecruiser 350/s months ago to fix an oil leak and replace rotten stringers and aft engine compartment bulkhead. When I put them back in the boat, I erroneously flipped them port to starboard. Am hoping that by similarly switching the props, I can avoid the...

Prop rotation on B-28

Is there a meaningful difference in performance if the counter rotating props on my Mercruiser powered B-28 turn towards or away from the keel? By ``towards`, I mean that the direction in forward gear on the top half of the propeller is to the centerline.
