I had a Kohler/Yanmar 5kw in my 28 and was very happy with it. It was mounted under the center hatch between the engines and was completely serviceable.

Go ahead and buy the fourth and put one on each side as Capt Pat suggested and two on the transom. If you want to stick with three, then put one in the center of the transom as low as you can get it.

THere are two on the transom of the 45 and we wish we would have had another on each side.

I changed mine out once a year whether they needed it or not. The only time I had to do extra was when I didn't pay attn to the tension and one got a little loose and chewed up. Otherwise, do the maintenance and keep wire brushes and can's of paint on hand.

The best I've seen was a bench seat integrated into the back of a tower and hanging over the back of the flybridge's floor. This allowed the captain's seat to be large and comfortable and still accomodate a couple extra folks up top.

Think of it as a rumble seat of sorts.
