Sounds like the basic problem is, not enough stroke or cable travel. That don't have anything to do with the cable itself. I am not familiar with the control that you have but......if the arm (in the control) to which you connect the cable has more than one hole, you should move the cable connection...

I do not know of an easy way to get the gasket out of the fuel tank......but if you are ever cruising along and the engine quits you can bet your last dollar that the "Gasket" has made it's way over the end of the fuel pickup pipe. Check your pulleys. If the pulleys are steel, rough and rusted, they will eat your new belts in pretty short order.....then your right back to square one.

It sounds to me like there is surely a problem. How far from the pump is the 5 gallon bucket? Money has no value once you clear the shore line.
