Rocky-If that's what you have, fine. My question is, with gassers, why? I may get arguments on this, but it seems to be overkill. It's always good to have more rather than less, but in this case you also have more weight, more space used and tougher (fork lift?) installation and removal. I have 4D's...

I have a pair of the 210's turning 20 x 20 cupped wheels and cruise @ 21-22 knots even with an end-of-season bottom. I get 1.5+ npg and that's at 2400 rpm. WOT is 2650 on those engines. I've been happy as hell with them for 2500 hours. My trannies are Twin Disc 1.5:1 and I kept my 1 3/8" shafts if t...

Not a thing that can/or should be done in the water. If your boat isn't painted and the lettering is in vinyl, you can remove it gently with a heat gun (but you don't have electricity). Oven cleaner will make it bubble off, but you will need water, and you're in as much a risk for a pollution ticket...

Those rudder shelves look like they don't need replacing right now. Did your surveyer tell you that you'll have to change the valves on your sea strainers to levered ball gate valves? They deemed the other (rotary) kind illegal for marine use. Not a fast enough shut-off and sometimes get frozen, as ...

It's a real classic and looks great on that nice teak deck. You could get something snazzier, but in my opinion is of the same genre of the boat. Strong as hell and with the foot pedestal assembled could take a Giant. If you decide to keep it, keep your eyes open for another rod holder for the other...

Grab that! Don't buy a set of Nibrals until you are sure of the size/pitch you really want. That sometimes takes a little while. An investment of that magnitude warrants some experimentation and you'll want to have a set of spares anyway. As far as the shafts go, I agree with Vic, especially because...

Peter- I had my 31 for over 25 years before there was a Bertram31.com. You can't imagine what it was without having this site and the knowledge behind it! Had to figure out all these things on my own with lots of trial and error...and $$$$. Enjoy the input...and the boat. You'll never need another! ...

Also, I read earlier that you were having a stern cockpit cover made. If that will be there for the winter, I recommend two things. First and most importantly, have your canvas guy put in a reinforced grometed center section into which you can insert a telescopic pole with a rubber butt on one end(d...

There are some wood fillers that come in different wood finishes. Match the color, fill the holes flush and if you or anyone in your family has a degree of artistic talent, get some "Sharpie" markers in brown tones and match the wood grain in the filled areas. As far as those rivets go, clip them an...

Interesting point. I was on a 31 that the owner had snap on (or slide on) fabric edged eisenglass pieces made to fit over that inside curve of the bridge/cabin/gunnel area. I wasn't crazy about how it looked, but I was amazed at how much of a difference it made deflecting wind and spray into the coc...

Pete- Welcome aboard! I have had my boat Bluebeard in Montauk since the 70's and have stayed at Star Island, Montauk Marine Basin and Montauk Sportsman's Dock. For running you will need the front and sides, if for no other reason than to protect your instruments and gauges from salt spray. The role the stern piece plays is when docked. Besides hiding what you have up there, I have found it's greatest value is during storms. Prevents "blow outs" of the othe...

If applied to both sides and allowed to dry, then carefully bring the pieces back together from front to back smoothly to avoid trapped air bubbles (if space allows, I usually put a piece of waxed paper in between as a slip sheet to avoid accidentally touching two piec...

A while back I was looking into a Volvo D-3 for my B-20. I did not purchase it for reasons of $ I could couldn't bring myself to spend. That being said, I was very impressed. If I had the bucks I would have done it in a heartbeat. Seemed to have been well thought out. If a D-4 is a higher HP version...

The boat is not/should not be the problem. The engines: did you mean 6bta's? I did not think they had a 400 hp version in 1992. More Cummins knowledgeable people in our group will chime in on whether I am correct on this. Back then, there were 210's, 250's (later 270's) and I don't even think the 30...

Always been a class act, always will be. They did their book the way they did their boats, beautifully down to the smallest detail with no apologies to anyone. You may be inundated with advice but rule of thumb is : If you know what your engine's WOT is rated at (this is key), take your boat out (warmed up) and nail your throttles to their max position. Look at your tach. Does what your tach says match your engine's rating? If they match, you are properly ...
