The key is that the grill or pan has to be HOT. If it's a grille, close the top and watch the thermometer. When the temperature levels off at a high point, drop the lubricated (melted butter, olive oil, vegetable or peanut oil, salad dressing...your choice) steaks on the fire. Close the grille, open...

Nothing in this country comes for free. Out our way, they're encouraging hooking up to town water. We have wells that test fine. My friend hooked up and now gets charged every time he flushes his toilet. As far as a "get around town" car, unless it's got a big trunk or storage space for groceries, k...

Just got back from Montauk. Untied my boat from the slip we moved it to and ran it to my regular one. One popped snap in my canvas! Spectacular day! We did not lose power, but strangely, several around me did, as did Southampton Hospital. Other than lots of leaves and branches, a few downed trees, I...

We got 2" of rain but made up for it with strong winds all day mostly from the SE and SW. The high tide "surge" this morning was within 6" of the bulkhead wall. In the final analysis, this may be Obama's "stimulus" plan for our local economy. The sale of plywood, thousands of dollars in haulouts, ta...

Get a set from any auto or marine store. The circular bases usually fit. If they're larger, grind them down, of they're smaller, no matter. Spray and/or grease the hell out of them before you set them into a bed of silicone. No matter what you do or how well you do it, if you get more than two seaso...

Peter- Without the pulpit, you'd have to go up on the bow to pick up and control the anchor. No fun in rocking conditions and/or with just you to do it with your family on board. With the pulpit the windlass will lock it up up there. Once that anchor comes out of the water, the length of the pulpit ...

Marshall- I don't know if this helps, but I had a situation one day when my alternator suddenly stopped putting out. On inspection (jiggling the wires to see if any were loose or not making contact), I discovered that one felt funny as if it might be broken under the insulation. I thought I'd jut cu...

The fouled plugs may be some of it. If you start losing rpms at wot after a while, check them again. Since you put in a new tank, hopefully the fuel and vent lines were also changed to the newer ethanol-proof ones. If not, have them done. Not that this is a sure thing, but I might consider using the...

The ones I knew were sportsfishermen with a 38 hull of the same style as the 31's. Built like a tank. By today's standards underpowered, but not then. Most were powder blue and white gelcoated. Actually great boats they should have developed further. Those that owned them loved them as they were "Be...

NE Rendezvous Return
Bob Fiorese's Frayed Knot and me and Bluebeard left Greenport a little after noon after a morning of intense rain and strong SW Winds. The run to Montauk was better than I thought it would be despite several changes of weather and lots of lobster pots along the way. Dug, Liz and Marley left on the A...

It's just part of the process. You're no more boneheaded than any of us were when we got our first "real" boat. Ask questions, watch what's being done when you can, don't let anyone intimidate you. Coil failures are unpredictable and usually, as you experienced very inconvenient. Fortunately, they're a simple replacement. A coil and a set of points/condensers are good spares unless you have an electronic ignition...then a spare module is in order. You'll be OK to go to Greenport. Hate black so...
