I have hand sewn some similar situations with fine mono thread used for fly tying. Sewing shops also sell the same stuff under clear nylon thread at half the price. I think either Singer or Coat's and Clark sell it in a plastc covered hang card sold as sewing machine supply places and even variety s...

The news today had interviews from several major economists and food manufacturers who ALL promised that the prices of ALL flour based products are skyrocketing and will continue to do so until something is done about our biofuel industries that are all fed by our subsidization of corn growing. All ...

I just got my latest copy of Salt Water Sportsman to find that our own John Brownlee has been named Editor-in Chief. Congratulations John! I'm sure all of The Faithful wish you much success! Hope the new job doesn't keep you away from your Bertram too much in the coming years. All the best. Walter

Mike-I doubt whether the Coasties will know. I'd suggest you call the TWIC. I don't know if it means anything relative to this issue, but the U.S.Coast Guard Building at the Southern end of Manhattan island now has "Department of Homeland Security" on the face of the building ABOVE the "U.S.Coast Gu...

That's a question I would ask the office nearest you. The exact wording is "If the reduced fee is paid, the TWIC expiration date will be 5 years from the issuance day of the supporting MML,MMD, HME or FAST card". Also: "The TWIC will cost $132.50 and is payable by Credit Card, Money order or Certifi...

Very frankly, this is so new I wouldn't trust anything I was told verbally. Get it in printed form and have it in hand when you go in. Once done I went over to the Transportation Security Administration at the suggestion of the Coast Guard. I was given a document with "frequently asked questions" one of which is "Who need...

Bob-You're far more knowledgeable on this subject than me, but I seem to remember two diesel Bravo 3 combinations at the boat show where some sort of jury rigged cooling stream of water was shooting over the Bravo 3 upper unit. They probably are the biggest boats in that class I have ever seen. There was one in our marina on the hard for over 5 years. At the end of that time, the boat was almost bare aluminum as you could hand peel the paint off it. As I understand it, painting aluminum is a very delicate thing and if not ...

I've only seen one Rybovitch in that smaller size and if it's got a bridge, it's one of very few. The boat I saw would appear every once in a while at Montauk when there used to be giant Tuna. If a Rybo Runner is a 30' center console, I'd love to see a picture of it. I had a guy in the next slip fro...

Just spoke to Brad Glass of the National Party Boat Owners Association on this TWIC issue. It is beginning to make sense to do things "under the radar" now. Thirty five years of doing it by the book, turns out to be a punishment rather than a reward. In filling out my paperwork for my 8th license renewal, I called the Coast Guard in NYC. I asked about the need for a TWIC card (Transportation Workers Identity Card). As I understand it, the accuracy of these instruments (+/- 50 ft, etc.) is based on the repeatability of an individual unit. Marked and returned to with the same unit. There IS a way to adjust two units to read the same by adding or subtracting a microsecond, and it's usually buried in one of the in...

Harry- If you want to find those wrecks again, use the Loran, then mark the spots on your GPS plotter. The Loran translations on GPS' that have them (my Northstar does) are not exact. If you have favorite Loran #'s, go to them via Loran, then punch in the spot on your GPS. That way they'll be exact....

The argument is, and has always been redundancy. A knockout punch / sun spots/ any failure of any sort on the GPS systems would cripple the entire navigational ability of planes, ships and who-knows-what. Not having some form of redundancy is naive, if not insane. I'm old enough to have been trained...
