Instrument panel

Post by James »

Guys,

I'm taking off the instruments to work on the chrome work around the dials and will also repaint the instrument panel. Can anyone tell me what the original finish for the instrument panel was? Just a black matt paint?

Thanks

James,
The original instrument panels were painted matt black, all the guages were Stewart Warner with chrome bezels.

My panels (1966) were engine turned chrome.

James, I'd like hear what you find out. My instrument panel has some black paint but it is peeling.

Mine look like they were originally turned chrome.

Plan to redo them this winter. I think RayboMarine on this board has redone some for a few memebers on this board.

I have a 73 sportfish so 2 stations and 2 panels. Not sure what to do about guages yet. Flybridge has stantard white teleflex guages, lower station has older but not orginal plain black.

I like the orginal look but don't mind some updated but "classic looking" instruments.

Originals were turned Chrome (that what you guys call it? ). My lower gauges are chrome rimmed Murphy gauges. When I repowered they replaced (traced) the piece on to white formica. Looks clean. Wished they had done the lower station on black formica instead of painting it.

My panel was a chromed on the edges, hollywood style panel, with a black plastic insert over the center where the gauges sit in. When we repowered we chromed the whole thing but did not like how the center turned out. The Cummins dealer I used had some of the same black material, that he got from Vicking Yacht, so we cut it and set that back in.

I found these two links from an older posting for other options.

Thanks for your replies

Pretty much all the dials are original (unless Tommy Drake tells me otherwise!) and the chrome rims are cleaning up nicely. The black paint is peeling now thus the need to renew it and it sounds like its just a matt finish that's needed as confirmed by Pete

James,

When Bruce and Patrick did the repower to Yanmars, we went out of our way to keep everthing as original as possible while transitioning to the approriate gauges. So yes, the dials should be original becuase we selected the same size replacements (Isspro I think, where changeouts were required). We then located the alarm panel under the lower station.
