VHF radio

Post by pschauss »

My Standard Horizon GX1600 just bit the dust. I'm looking for a unit with built-in GPS so that I don't have to interface it to my GPS. I notice that Standard Horizon (GX1400GP) and Icom (M330G) both make a version with built-in GPS for around $200. Is there a reason to spend more than that?

Both Standard Horizon and Icom make great units. Spend more, depends on what you are looking for. AIS? Look at the more expensive ones, look at the options, compare them and see if there is anything you might need. Otherwise buy one of the ones you looked at and put the money into a high quality Antenna.

I also suggest you look at the Cobra MR F77(W for white, B for Black) GPS. Excellent unit very close to $200 and, Like Tony said, get the best antenna you can, I got a 8' 6db Shakespeare Galaxy and I receive the Miami Coast Guard transmissions all the way in Melbourne, over 200 miles away! Of course this also has a lot to do with their equipment but I am astounded.
Looking for my next boat!
