Looking great Jason!

It is tight on the port side...I decided to trim a little off the face of pipe to give additional space between the exhaust and the motor box.

Carl that’s definitely an idea I will keep in mind. I think I can squeeze the insulation on there the motor box still has the old stuff inside as well. I am going to strip that off and see what it looks like.

Well got laid off for the holidays so I am trying to take advantage of and work on the boat. Just my luck the weather got cold and windy but the boat is wrapped and I have heat lamps and a heater. I used Capt Pats idea isolating the forward bilge from the rest and installing a screw port for emergencies. I also rebuilt the step for the companion way that I already built. Installed the last two backing pads and seacocks in the main cabin bilge for the head and ac. Notched the companion way deck rails and installed the seawater intake hoses. Built a fold down hatch for electrical panel in the cabin.

Rick I used 2” for the M/E and 1 1/4” for the head and 3/4” for the A/C

Today I worked on plumbing the dripless shaft seals. I took the end caps off the heat exchanger drilled and tapped them to fit a 90deg fitting then soldered them in place and made new rubber gaskets to accept new fittings. Then painted ready for install tomorrow.

Tony yes this is a supply for the dripless seals I am also going to tee these together port and starboard side together down closer to the seal. In case I lose one feed for some reason they still have water.

I haven’t posted in a while. I have been getting parts in and doing what I can do with the weather and what I have. I pulled some wire,finished dripless,mounted some pumps,installed some lights,layed out the helm,mounted the autopilot pump,made up all steering lines,routed some shift and throttle cables. Nice setup!!!!! I notice you used multiple layers of tape before cutting out, I wore through in one corner with only one layer, the mark will be covered but multiple layers of tape is a must with a jigsaw.

I've got to follow your lead and grind off the markings on the bolts holding down the hydraulic steering, it makes the setup look so much nicer. I ended up with a couple scratches on the metal base plate, I tried getting them out with neverdull and it hasn't worked, I will have to figure out how to buff them out.

Nice work - I really like the way you set up the helm. Looks like you went with the SMX Seaview gauges. Did you look at any of the other options for Analog to digital? I was looking at the Furuno option (Analog - NMEA2000 Converter) and their furuno f1-70. What steering wheel did you end up with? That looks like maybe 13.5"?

Thanks guys! I did look at other options but the SMX was just a good fit not the cheapest way but hopefully it works out just fine.Yes the wheel is a 13.5.

Got to have the cup holders!! The radar came this week. Pulled the M/E harnesses and got everything wired. Moving along. Exhaust wrap is finished and ready for install. Filled the steering system up no leaks works great. Image Image Image Image

i like that idea tie wrap the funnel when you need three hands pouring the steering hydraulic oil. my engines are about 2" further back then yours .transmission IRM-220 mounts are touching the fuel tank bulkhead. i had free use of boatyard travelift when building my boat twenty years ago.i had yanmars at first and pulled them out so to restore balance i had to move cummins as far back as possible.

Beautiful work. My boat will not be a showboat like yours but it will be nice.

Like Bob, I'm moving my engines back as well. I've got some photos of the new stringers and engine bulkhead which I'll post into another thread in the near future. Right now I've got to go say a prayer to the wind gods for some good weather over the next couple of days.

i am trying my very best to save you guys a lot of painstaking experimenting with the center of balance. i was lucky enough to have the use of a large travelift and with one strap of the travelift around the main bulkhead (31 Bertram FBC center of gravity) with boat in water raised very, very slowly and (the fat kid on the seesaw ) the transom MUST go down the main weight is AFT of the main bulkhead . this is the telltale of how the boat will take waves and turn at high speed , put simply the reverse chine from 4' from the transom to the transom must be underwater or the boat will not handle to its best ability. looking down from your seat on the bridge the ocean should be breaking under the pillars and the first 10' of the boat is out of the water i guarantee the boat will be the driest sport fisherman in the marina.

i must add after you are finish with the boat don't put your tool roll away in the V-berth !!!!!!! PFD`s ,away dock lines , pillars cushions ,rain gear and that's it never let that bow hit a wave it must go over without hitting then you can sleep at the wheel in four foot seas and make fun of the 32' center consoles triple outboards taking a bath and thrown all over the place trying to stay up with you as you chill with a open cup of coffee in your hand -----trust Bob i will make you the most hated basterd on the ocean for outboards. (on the mike oh i think i go down in the cabin and make another coffee!!!!

the rear motor mount on the gears is touching the fuel tank bulkhead. the plug on the turbo is touching the rear of the engine box and there is two inches of exposed shaft before the PSS seal. lets do this by way of mathematic. two 1150 pound engines = 2300 moved toward the transom by 3" in addition to the bridge chairs moved back to the absolute limit (about 1' further then OEM) due to steering pod. a sit down bridge with vision over the Bertram bow chock. so we have shifted quite a bit of weight AFT in addition to easy serpentine belt removal with standard 1/2" breaker bar in belt tensioner (5 minute job).

My QSB 5.9s are a little heavier at 1450#s not including the gear boxes.

I like the B28's but what I really like to find is a B35 in decent shape.

Just as an aside, I own the old Pepper from the Mathews but I really like their new Pepper.

The 35 is my next boat too!
One just slipped from my hands a while back.

However it will just remain a dream boat, as I DO NOT want to go through years and years of fixing and dealing with technicians, and...paying these technicians and all that goes along with bringing to my standards a 40-50 yo boat.
Had I had the opportunity to choose between my 28 and the 35, I’d probably go with the 35, but now its too late...
Oh well, Im happy with the 28, lets not be greedy!

Rawleigh, I knew that saying from long before I came here, as my grand mother was always pointing it out to me when I was a child.
And yes, this year is the first, after 10 summers, that the boat is almost as good as I want it to be...
I still have to pull the motors and do some shaft work but that's left for next year, probably.
I'm saying probably, as I would have done it last year had it not been for the covid lockdows that froze everything, because I'm now seeing the atrocities in Singapore and fearing we're not over yet with this damn thing...

I feel your pain. I was just making good progress on my boat and my GF made me take most of April off. Next week we start hammering down to get this old gal back in the water.
