Upholstery Service Needed - Eastern NC

Post by CamB25 »

I knew i should have taught myself to sew....

My upholstery guy pull the plug on me after I waited around for months for his schedule to clear up. Figures. If there is one thing I've learned during this project, it's patience. Now I'm stuck. I'm calling around the local Wilmington shops, but the boat is on the trailer and mobile.

Does anyone know a good shop anywhere in eastern NC that I can call? Thanks!

Cam

I know a guy that got so frustrated with the Canvas guys, he went out and purchased a starter machine for $500, and orders all his canvas and glass for the enclosure from Sail Rite. Watched the online videos and did his own enclosure. He figures over the last few years he saved thousands.

He is now ready to retire and figures he can make a few dollars repairing or doing small canvas jobs.

Maybe learning to sew is not that difficult. If you can rebuild a boat the way you did, sewing, easy as all get out.

Tony...I don't think we can wait another 10 years for Cam to sew his own upholstery. Guy's lets find him an upholsterer!

Hope you noticed I said "we" can't wait...

If things get real desperate...I have a guy at the end of my block that does high end custom furniture and upholstery.
Not sure if he's done boats, but as a last resort....

Cam, this small family owned shop in Havelock, NC, did some canvas work on my Everglades 243. He had several classic cars in his shop when I was there, so I would call and find out how backed up he is. Nice guy who did good work at a fair price.

Solved? maybe. Hide Tide Canvas in Wilmington. They seem great and they only do full jobs like mine, so they have the right crews. 3 guys were here today templating for curtains, cushions and everything else. I should have this wrapped up by September.

Insurance is another matter entirely. Progressive is dropping me because I changed from I/Os to outboard. So, I'm back in the market for insurance again. survey, etc.

soon!!!

Hey Cam, looks like we will be settling in Southport. Will be looking for a marina for the boat.

Cam, welcome to North Carolina! I expect to see you and your B-25 at the 2021 NC Bertram Rendezvous at Morehead City / Beaufort next year. The following link is to the Southport Marina; it is a very nice marina/dry stack owned and operated by some friends. The manager is Hank Whitley (910) 398-4378.

Thanks, Charlie. I found Adam through my surveyor, who I found through my upholstery guy who I found on the web.

Engaged!

Tony -

That exit tax is real in northern VA. They hit you when you sell a house. They call it the Metro tax. Cost me an extra $1500 to sell. Donkeys everywhere up there.

Cam

It is real here also. Jyyst had a neighbor tell me how to best it. He purchased a second home in Florida. That home is in his name. The home in NJ he put in his wife's name.

He is claiming Florida florida as his primary, while his eife claiims Nj. He plans on running his business out of Florida during the winter and then just before they are ready to pack it in, his wife will sell the NJ house, then spends the next 7 months renting a cheap apartment, while they wrap up things before the move.

His accountant claims, that gets them out of the tax.

Joe,
Good luck and make sure you document all the ins and outs of getting out of NJ and into NC. LOL. Southport looks like a beautiful historic area.

Cam and
Joe, I know I pointed you guys to Southport Marina, but it got slammed by Hurricane Isaias early yesterday morning and the entire basin of wet slips was shoved into an ugly pile. The dry stack structure held up well, and the boats on the hard stood up to the storm. The combination of a full moon high tide and the storm surge overpowered the floating docks and they pushed the pilings over, which resulted in the raft of boats being piled against the shore side bulkhead. I know the owners and they will have it back up and operational as quickly as humanly possible.

We moved in to our new house in Southporton hurricane day, No damage at our house. we are about a half mile from the river walk and 3 blocks from water but at a bit of an elevation.

A waterspout turned into a tornado on Bald Head Island and moved across to Southport and on to the marina. The damage was significant there. There are also many trees down and other damage throughout town. Electricity is back on though and cleanup in underway.

The Southport Marina took a hit from the tornado and the boats piled up.Quite a mess. Can't get in there without being a slip holder. The racks look pretty good surprisingly.
