Rudder Bearings

Post by Joseph Fikentscher »

Starboard rudder collar came off easily. Having trouble with the bearing. Need to replace the rudder shelves. Suggestions for removing the bearings?

Joe

I would let it soak in oil for a few days if that doesn't work I would try cutting it off.

Yup, what Tony said, spray it up and let it soak using Bolt Buster or similar.

As far as cutting it off...bearing is hard so its more like grinding it off. Its why I only use Bronze bushings and stay aways from the bearings.

Agree. I used Corrosion X, and then resorted to cutting. I also replaced with bronze rudder bushings instead of bearings. There's no difference in feel, they're a lot simpler, they don't require a Corrosion X spray down every few months, and despite my neglect, they still look and work fine.

Ok, I see parts for rudder bearings, rudder flanges but nothing for rudder bushings. What am I missing?

Machine shop unless you can find and cob together from an industrial supply house like McMaster.

I just had to cut mine off this weekend. One of them came apart no problem and the other required cutting.

Try these links see if you see anything you can use. The Tides Marine bearings come in different styles and sizes.

Press them into a housing with a thrust washer over(bronze washer) rudder is held up by a collar.

Bearings are nice till they corrode which takes no time in a boat.

I'm not sure where the improvement is using a bearing over a bushing. Rudder Port is a big bushing...

These might work. Expensive though.

McMaster has it all...but at close to a 50% markup at times. Go direct to a bearing house...Cangro Industries is my go to, but others like Long Island Transmission Co or let your fingers do the walking. In truth, I'd take the acetal over the SS...its a rudder shaft that just needs some support. Less is more.
