welllllll looks like I'm not a Hatt guy anymore

Post by thuddddddd »

Just signed the papers on a 38 Topaz Supersport (express/command bridge) … low hours Cummins 480CE's .. needs all the things you'd expect a 35 year old boat, who's previous owners seemed to loose interest in 5 or so years ago … drippy stuff, non working stuff, needs a really really good cleaning stuff …. but the interior updates should be easy , it's got a full sized head with separate shower … and the motors are good .... 28knt cruise .. 32/33 wot

Timmy

One problem, still not a Bertram.

But all kidding aside good luck with her. I knew a guy who mated on a 37 Topaz. He said it was a beast in a head sea. Just chewed up the waves. Not sure what the 38 is like.

Congrats Timmy; I've only heard very positive comments about the Topaz brand. A friend had one and he loved it.

I posted the Pascoe article on the Topaz 28 knowing it wasn't your model, but thought the info on the company was interesting.

Bob,

This is Timmy, you have to keep up.
I'll do what I can to bring you up to date from when I got on board...

Timmy had/has a 41 Hatteras FBC that he was replacing the ol' 6-53's to install Whalers 6-53 Twin Turbos motors, but wanted to turn it into an Express, so cut off the top and...

...and then started training dogs.

- - couple years pass - -

Then purchased an older 34 Hatteras with gas motors, I believe...but wanted to freshen it up a bit before using.

Then just recently Timmy went to look at a Steal of a deal 34 Hatteras with Cummins in Florida.
Boat needed a bit of work and it was a long haul back to New England so decided to stay with what he had.

...and bought a 38 Topaz.

thank you carl for the enlightenment!!! normally you would have a multi-collection of boat performing a different function. 31 Bertram and twin 300 Verado on a custom 28' cigarette offshore race boat turn into a center console.i would be damn if i purchase another 31' Bertram even if it was a deal. having a 38" Bertram in a separate location to fish the warmer water canyons is a plus. sometimes a partnership can work out on a boat if both partners contribute the same or equivalent nautical brains to build anything and the other with cash.i guess some of you brothers have a boat in the northeast and one for your Florida house.------------very smart fish all year but Timmy has all these boats in one location and really perform the same function 34hat,41hat, and 38' Topaz. now i am really confused!!!

If you go over to see Timmy, make sure he does not try to make you a deal you can't refuse. You could wind up owning a Hatt in pieces, or one that has gassers and drinks fuel and needs work, oh there might be a bridge in there someplace.

Plus if you wait about a month, you could pick up a 38 Topaz from him on the cheap.

Y’all go easy on Timmy. I’m pretty sure he’s the only guy around with more non-running offshore boats than I have. I’m glad he checks in periodically with his next project. Gives me something to aspire to.

Congrats Timmy. Hope it works out well for you. Good luck on the knees as well.

Great news Timmy!

Weather was far from great this weekend. I had Saturday morning free to work on my boat but the rain held me up.
Finally cleared up around noon...I had to go

Sunday...thought I should start building an Arc.

so the last 2 trips to Jersey have been fairly uneventful .. other than the suck traffic the first trip... the boss (jp) was out of town doing real work.. so Cort and I cleaned stuff and took the boat for a rip up the coast … it did not fail to impress …

this past weekend we played the traffic game a little better and cut 1 1/2 hours off each leg …. went for a little putt on sat with kathi... stopped over at Neils and snax's place …. sun Kathi and I went out all by our lonesomes for a run up the coast …. all I can say … love the boat .. but the number of dumbasses on the water was amazing (not even counting myself) .. reminded me of tri state traffic on the road.. they all have boating /driving as a second/third language …. good thing … it's a one and done (the number of boating seasons the boats gonna stay in Jersey) …
Still super happy with the boat... .. and the vision of whats it's going to become … with a little TLC and a load of cash .. is pretty appealing

It's good to hear you found one you really seem to like out of the box instead of just the potential of what it could be.

Whats funny is New Jersey, I believe, requires a basic seamanship course to be out on the water...or maybe its just for PWC. In either case weekend warriors are in no shortage...

Weekend shore traffic starts on Thursdays...horrible as I'm in it to get home without the joy of the shore at the end. Used to go to Uncles house in LBI...I closed up shop, went home, grabbed some grub and took a several hour nap then hopped in the car about 11pm and head down. Leaving anytime Sunday was just a plain traffic horror.

The Topaz is a greats b oat. You will not be disappointed. Yes a Boaters coarse is required in NJ.

Problem is all these people think they are driving on the parkway. I am am amazed how much people forget or just ignore what they learned in the boating course.

I was on a boat not to long ago when the "Cap" cut in front of another boat...then slowed down to see where he wanted to go.

Usually I'm a semi silent backseat observer as a guest, but this time my mouth opened...get back on the throttle, you just cut that guy off and now your gonna stop in front of him???...GO! Pretty sure we got the well deserved bird.

Charlie J wrote:same in NY buy the boat, and all they know is how to turn the key to start it

yeah...then comes the docking.

-Love the face when they take it out of gear and the boat keeps going.

long story no need to get into details let`s just say i have driven 1000 boats in the last 20 years . i was obligated with a captain`s lic. (to make it legal for boatyard) and free slip also to pull my boat out and put boat back in 10 times a season. So the salesman would get in the boat and i would help the rich lady sometimes in high heels get into boat and i drive while he/she sold the boat and when purchased give driving lessons. 90% of the boats were 32' plus center consoles some 38'. ME; what kind of boat did you have prior??? them: oh we never owned a boat before!!! OUCH ! you guys know docking a triple engine outboard is not differcult when you get the hang of it but without JOYSTICK that can turn outside engines in either direction in combination with bow thruster can put that bow in a tight place litterally walk in sidewards however all those controlls proved to be overwelming to the majority and they crash into dock with triple and double 350hp yamaha outboards with no "brakes". the best was a dude whom purchase a 55' brand new Hatteras and never owned a rowboat before.a captain expect anything as she let go of the wheel and turn toward me at 30mph because she got scared a big wave was coming (ferry boat).
i drove a 38' Topaz and a 32' topaz express about 40 miles offshore both with Cunnims power, both have . nice layout excluding that tuna tower on the 38' in northeast waters.
