Insurance

Post by kipp »

Travelers decided not to renew for Targeted Species. I had 2 claims, and they made some comments about the age(46 years young) of the boat. Any recommendations on who I should contact to get her insured??? Thanks for any replies. Kipp

I carried over Wells Marine Insurance when I bought my boat from Charlie. Very reasonable rates and they are familiar with 31s as I know of at least one more board member who recently switched to them as well. www.wellsmarineins.com

As a former TowBoat US provider in Mystic for 27 years I would highly recommend Boat US.
You may want to consider getting only liability coverage. ( get a lot, steering, engines electrical can fail at the worst time in crowded harbors and marinas )

Read your coverage closely because if there is a loss you can be sure the insurance company will. Muskrats crawled into the exhaust of a boat near where I moor during the winter and chewed through the exhaust hose sinking the boat. The claim was denied because muskrats are classified as rodents and the homeowners policy specifically excluded "rodent damage". You and I know this normally means mice in the upholstery but the lawyers agreed with the insurance company.

I read my boat insurance which was under my homeowner policy, found the same wording and bought a yacht policy from a marine insurance specialist. It was a little more expensive but has much broader coverage including "declared value (what I say its worth and insure it for)" instead of "actual cash value (depreciated cost)", greater navigation limits and engine damage among other things.

Kipp, I highly recommend Boat US. They have insured Alchemy since I purchased her and they are great. They also pay 50% of any haul for a named storm which can give you a solid sense of calm at a stressful time if you are able to get your boat out.

They will also insure agreed upon value provided that you work with them to agree. I am working on re-valuing as we speak.

They have been a HUGE help to me over the years. I cannot speak highly enough of them.

Homeowner's coverage in Virginia only goes up to 16', I think. Anything over that needs its own policy.
