Annapolis boat show

Post by CamB25 »

I spent a couple of hours at the boat show in Annapolis yesterday. I had to give my body a day off from boat work.

No Bertrams in sight this year, but a heck of a lot of VERY expensive fiberglass bobbing around the docks. New boat market is insane right now. Example: 34 Chris Craft CC with twins...boat show special $409k. Want a simple 25 Parker with a single? $110k+

Hunt had the 26 CC and 32 on display but none of the big Hunt toys.

My award for the best new design goes to the Melges 26 - https://www.melgespower.com/ Really interesting design and I love the carbon fiber hard top support. Hull is made in Dubai and shipped to Melges in Wisconsin for final assembly. Very well done, high level of finish. Expect to pay around $175k for this... The Melges guys said someone local to their shop has the 28 Bertram molds and is making new hulls. Interesting?

John over at Worton Creek has a new project...70 Spencer...wrecked on a reef in Puerto Rico being delivered to the owner in Tortuga. Now is your chance to lock in a good deal while he is fixing her up! New it went for $7.5M. I'm hoping he still has a small corner of the paint shop open for me when my priming party is complete!

When I cruised over for a look from the water, Bertram had the 35 there. It was talks in between the Marriott and the parking lot towards Spa Creek

When we were up at the Shelter Island in August at the NE gathering Charlie and I watched them drop one of those in the water. Interesting design.

We climbed around on the 35 and it was the same as last year. This time I asked them what it's listed at. The guy gave me one of those "if you have to ask it ain't for you" looks and then I could swear he said $950. Maybe he said $750. Beautiful lines, but both times I've been on it it struck me as not a lot of boat for that kind of money.

Cam, Tony,

This is the trend, it appears, as many manufacturers choose this vertical bow design. And triangular boat shape overall. Mororboats and sailboats alike.
But to see a white Mercury, that's news!
Also, what are those two vertical things on either side of the engine?

Yannis,

White engines are all the rage over here! The engine on the Melges is mounted using a port-a-bracket http://www.portaproducts.com/index.php? ... ta-bracket

The two poles are shallow water anchors - "power poles" http://www.power-pole.com/ attached to the port-a-bracket

The Melges is interesting and I am sure well built, but in my opinion ugly.

It needs something....maybe a racing stripe to highlight the shear line. There is no rub rail on the boat

Start getting used to the wally design. Both power and sail.

As for the shallow water anchor, that's for elsewhere ...try it here and you end up with an indestructible (as they say) anchor system , on a submerged boat!! Ha ha, what an invention !!!
