Hurricane Approaching

Post by CaptPatrick »

OK guys, time to pay attention...........

Tropical Storm JOAQUIN will soon become a hurricane and could be destined for the upper mid-Atlantic coast line and points north, by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Everybody in the coastal area from Virginia north through Connecticut & Rhode Island needs to start preparations now.

Don't be caught off guard!

Local weather gurus here in SE NC say we are due for some heavy rains, but others say we may be lucky and Joaquin will bypass us but might hit the Outer Banks which are north of us. With the moon near full tidal surges might be a problem. Hope all of you guys north of us fare well.

I was told to keep an eye on the system behind it as well. None of the models show it as heading our way yet but some of the weather nerds are having fun playing "what if". Conditions could develop that will make it a biggie around 10/9. Probability is close to zero right now but it's something to keep in mind when doing your storm prep. Then again I know nothing about meteorology and I'm storm shy. Good Luck.

I hope it keeps well offshore. I'm on long Island till Friday. Will not have much time to prepare. Wife and my boys will be busy getting ready either way. I pray it stays away.

Ironic to read all these predictions insomuch as it was only two weeks ago that the bulkhead and beach access reconstruction at my home was completed following its dismemberment by Superstorm Sandy.

The weather channel I usually monitor just announced in the last hour the models are beginning to predict Joaquhin will move further east and skirt a lot of the East Coast. Almost all of SC and NC are now under a flash flood watch. The center of NC has already had a bunch of rain (not from Joaquin) while we on the coast have had much less. Still too soon to be sure though. The concern now is that the ground is well saturated and new rain won't be able to soak in so flooding is a concern.

It's been raining for days here in Morehead City. My rain gauge shows we've already had 12" of rain and they're calling for more. If a hurricane came in here the trees would just blow over it's so wet.

The Emergency Management Meetings here on the Northern Neck of Virginia (between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers) are calling for higher surge than in Isabell!! Close to 5 feet above normal high. I just hope we don't get much wind with it after the soaking we have had from this Nor'easter!!

Tony,
My place is OK, we are about 300 miles north. I do have a buddy on Rum Cay, which is in the center of this beast today.
Stay high and dry folks!

Looks like the storm will be leaving the Bahamas in a few hours & sparing the Little Bank any direct contact. From there the forecast is good for Joaquin to thread a path offshore of the U.S. coast line and well west of Bermuda. If the predictions hold true everyone will be out of harms way and Randall will be hanging ten on Tuesday...

This North Easter is killing us more than the Hurricane would have. This wind is not supposed to let up until Thursday. Here in NJ we have it for close to two weeks now and it is really starting to crank up.

Note from Rum Cay:

Hurricane Joaquin has destroyed Rum Cay.
The island is in the eye at this time and the backside is expected to last another 12 hours.
At this time all fresh w...ater wells are contaminated.
Most of the houses on front street are gone.
The only supply dock is gone.
Most roofs are gone.
The power lines are all down and the list is big.
The people are desperate for help.
I've been able to get through to cell phones but the service is not good enough to get out pictures.
It's really bad.
I understand that Long Island and San Sal is about the same.

We have dodged the bullet here on the Chesapeake Bay with just high water and winds with gusts in the 40+mph range. Nothing like what would have happened if Joaquin had come to visit. There have been sporadic power outages, but nothing bad. I pray for the others who had the devastating weather and thank God that we were spared.

Most people may have gotten lucky with hurricane Joaquin BUT the US flagged El Faro, a cargo ship carrying 28 Americans and 5 Poles sank during storm while enroute between Jacksonville FL and San Juan PR...
